Gen 1 250,000 miles AWD has an intermittent sound like dinner plates clanking together coming from the front left side. I've been under the car at that spot and I've already noted that the vibration damper on the CV axle on that side has come off and is rolling around. That makes a lower tuned rumbling sort of sound, this clanky sound sounds different. Dunno if the two issues are related.

Nothing else in that area appears to be loose, and I've put my hands on everything there I can think of and pushed and pulled it as much as I could. No popping sound when turning so it doesn't appear to be the ball joints.

Here's an audio recording of the sound I took while I was driving: http://vocaroo.com/i/s0hXTMREe3T6

I used to have a Ford that made a similar clanking noise sometimes, especially that one time I took it on a washboard surface road. Never got popping noises on turns. Two mechanics couldn't find anything wrong, but we finally just replaced the ball joints and that cured it.
