Our 2002 Honda CRV is leaking some kind of clear fluid from the inside of the passenger side dash (underside) onto the floor mats, and at the same time is making a tinny, scrapey, strange noise from that same area of the car (seems to be inside the AC vents on that side, almost) any time we turn the steering wheel (right or left, doesn't matter). After a few days of this, the car is also pretty stinky from what we assume is the leaked fluid-- smells vaguely like sulfur.

Any idea what could be going on? Our neighborhood mechanic is going to look at it in a few days, but is it safe to drive in the meantime?

Think it's likely the drain for your air conditioner is blocked. It could make a sloshing sound when turning and the smell could be mold. A good mechanic should be able to diagnose easily and flush the system after clearing the blockage.

A big welcome to the forum, good to have you on board.
In the meantime, I wouldn't use the a/c, just roll the windows down. A must would be, when possible turn the heater ON, this will dry up the condensation in the heater/ac housing. JMHO and good luck.
Times two on the DRAIN STOPPED UP !!!!!!!!!!!

Get under car locate drain and gently try to unblock. Sometimes it's takes a soft straw or stirrer type thing to do!
