My friend's CR-V '17, 1.6 Diesel (160PS) Varta battery died after 1.7 years. Is this normal? The car is driven 60km (total) each workday through moderate traffic, and light weekend use. Any similar experiences?

Varta is a rare type of battery in the US, but one with a great reputation for longevity. They were sold under the Bosch name as well here in the US.
Since your CRV is so young, involve the dealership in the cost of replacement as the warranty is still active.

As I said its my friend's CR-V and they have replaced it under warranty.

From my personal expierience my factory Varta died just before the 3rd year and it was replaced by the warranty, the second didn't even last that long... Was replaced by an Exide one (lasted 3 years+) and now I have installed a Yuasa. Time will tell.

From my personal experience German products and longetivity are completely different things... ;)
