I have a 2018 CRV LX with the backup sensors. It works great for detecting cars, but doesn't work when there is a person behind me. The guy at the dealership did not know if the sensor should detect something other than cars. We had it tested and he said he could not see anything wrong. Should the sensor detect a person or child behind you? Thanks

You have Honda's cross traffic sensing. It uses two radar units in the rear bumper but doesn't make use of the rear camera. So it works well for large moving metal objects but not for people.

Detection of people is very sporadic, for the reasons Traylaw has presented .. so please do not rely on it.. you still have to use your rear camera and/or mirrors.

Keep in mind.. the intention is to stop fender benders in parking lots ... not as a bullet proof safety device that can detect every object, organic or inorganic behind you. As more and more safety systems are put into motor vehicles, we as owners need to be mindful of both their intent and their limitations, and adjust accordingly.

Yep

backup sensors are an oem accessory.
And for what a dealer would clobber you for them you could have gotten an EX
