We have a 2016 Touring model CRV. We live in Colorado. I noticed while washing it yesterday the the chrome on the back tailgate has brown discoloration coming through. Is this normal? Is it road salt from the winter? Is there anyway to stop it?

It isn't "pitted". I used chrome cleaner and Maquires cleaner wax. The "chrome" is smooth and the discoloration seems to be under the chrome. The license plate is pitted. Don't know where metal shavings are coming from.......
