I've been hearing some strange squeaking noises recently. Also, I started hearing a "bong" sound when I was in reverse & turning sharply one way or the other.

I took it to my mechanic & he said that the drive shaft had a problem with where it connected and could be removed, or replaced for about $550 plus labor.

We had him remove it, since our CR-V is pretty high mileage.

I'm wondering, is this normal? Is there anything that I could have done to prevent it?

Yes, it's normal for components to wear out over time, and the drive shaft is exposed to all of the elements.
The joints at each end tend to wear out, and require a machine shop to replace them.

Just remember that your CR-V is now Front Wheel Drive only, so in slippery conditions may handle a bit differently.
