I have a 2.2 cdti engine and the emmission control warning light is almost always illuminated. I can find a description of the system in my maintenance manual, however, I cannot find any details of what causes this fault or how to cure it. Any help would be appreciated.

This issue may be connected to a DPF (diesel particulate filter) problem.

If the vehicle is fitted with DPF and you do a lot of short journeys then it is possible that the filter does not ever get to regenerate. (It does this by getting hot and basically burning the deposited particulates.) The engine does have a mode to assist this process by temporarily using more fuel to get the filter hot enough to regenerate.

If the light has been on for a while the filter may be permenantly damaged.
The normal cure is to drive at a speed on the highway that will give enough time for the filter regeneration to take place. (in the UK fully warmed up 10-20 miles on the motorway in 5th gear at 70mph seems to be the general recommendation.)
