I am so glad I stumbled onto this thread. When I saw the word hitch, I thought maybe I could get some advice. I have a 2018 CR-V EX-L, and it looks like I am going to have to buy a hitch and rent a trailer for my move from Phoenix back to Texas. Most of my things have already been moved, but I am still packing up some things getting ready to sell my house. I am sure if I rent the entire hitch and install from U-Haul I can get by with the smallest trailer possible (4X8). Main problem though, is I have never towed a trailer and how will I know the hitch and lights are installed correctly. It sounds like you all are weekend warriors or family campers, so I hoped some of you could offer some advice on what to look for when the hitch and lights are connected to know the person knows what they are doing. I'm not crazy about hauling the trailer, but I've Googled and watched YouTube and friends too, about the difference in driving. I just don't want any surprises with the trailer hitch in the middle of driving across Texas no man's land. I've driven that route many times, and once you leave El Paso, it's pretty small pickins where to get help.
So, any insight offered would sure be appreciated!
Thanks

UHaul trailers are way overbuilt, they have to be because people go out of their way to abuse them. Being overbuilt makes their trailers heavy. The CRV has a 1500 lb max tow rating (which includes the weight of the empty trailer) with a 150 lb max tongue weight. UHaul are experts at installing hitches/lights. Doubt they would let you leave their store without inspecting the hitch/lights. My guess is a empty 4X8 UHaul trailer could be half of the 1500 lb CRV max weight towed. Not much weight capacity left for stuff.

Don't push it hard on the long open roads, we've already seen upper 90s ambient temps in West Texas.

Have you considered renting a UHaul van and towing the CRV on a trailer?

It looks like the lightest empty UHaul trailer will be approaching 50% of the CRV’s tow capacity.

Hitch and roof rack

Hi:
I bought a 2017 CRV EX-L. I went with the Honda hitch package so I could be sure that the foot actuated rear hatch opening would work. And it does work great. I purchased a Thule 4 bike rack that was on sale at a local dealer.
For the roof, I went with the Yakima system. The roof racks are quick release, easily removed when not in use, easy to put on and each attachment foot has a neat little cover. Makes it look like I have 4 GPS units on my roof. I already had Yakima ski racks and I bought 2 of their kayak cradles. I went with an extra wide crossbar so I could put 2 kayaks side by side. The whole roof rack cost me about $1000 but I think it is much better than anything Honda offers.

Pete Spaulding, Sacramento, CA

I'm going to buy a 2019 CR-V, EX trim over the next week or two.

I'd like to be able to put as a big a box as I can get away with on the roof, ideally in a configuration where there would be room for both the box and a canoe (or a bike.). I assume this may necessitate crossbars that stick out a little on the sides.

Additionally, I'd like to have a hitch-mounted bike rack that can fit four bicycles.

In buying my CR-V, should spring for having the roof rails ($399) and the trailer hitch ($508) added? Or are there better/less expensive third-party options I should look into?

Also, what are my best options for adding a big box, and a hitch-mounted rack for 4 bikes?

All advice or input appreciated! Thanks!

(Originally posted in an accessories sub-forum. But it was suggested that I also put this here. Hopefully, I'm doing this correct--if not, please feel free to correct.)

So I bought a 2018 EXL with no roof rails and ended up installing them myself. If you can work it into the price when you buy car, I would, but it wasn’t a huge hassle. OEM rails ran me about $310 on bay and installation took two hours (mostly painless). Great thread on installing them here:

I then put Yakima Corebar crossbars on Skyline towers. There are fixed positions on the Honda rails that minimize flexibility. My crossbar spread is about 29” so that was not an issue finding a cargo box. Bigger issue was finding one long enough for skis (my primary use) that didn’t hit tailgate given how far up front slots are. I ended up picking up a used Whispbar box that fits perfectly and holds skis up to 190 cm with 13 cu ft of space. Hope this info is helpful. Automotive exterior Roof Vehicle Luxury vehicle Roof rack

To haul 4 bikes you will need a 2” receiver, the Honda one is 1 1/4 which I did and wish I had gone a different way, I’ve seen some aftermarket hitches that look really nice.
I added the roof rails and cross bats which I am very happy with, load capacity around 165 pounds, He NRS mskes a cargo box I am going to get for snowshoes and boots.
I bought d a great place for genuine Honda Acessories, HandA in California.

I have a 2012 CRV and went with the OEM roof rack. We use Thule equipment to carry two Kayaks -- not sure about being able to mount a box and a boat. My daughter has a Forester, got the OEM hitch, and uses a Thule bike rack that can hold multiple bikes. She got the one that can swing out of the way so you can open the back of the car without removing the rack. I would go to the Thule website and check what they have available to get an idea of what can go on the car and how much space would be needed.

My wanted roof rails on her '18 EX just for the looks. So I searched the internet and found a nice set on Amazon for $130 (From China). They came with necessary bolts and were easy to install. They have bolt holes to attach cross bars, but at this time she doesn't want them. As far as I can tell they look the same as OEM ones, Happy wife, happy live!!

I bought the Chinese OEM knockoffs too, because they're the only ones to offer it in black. The rails fit tight and strong, but the rubber seals are an other story. Very cheap and they don't look good. They're wavy and don't follow the bodyline. It's not a huge issue, just looks ugly.

FWIW, my sales guy recommended I go to U-Haul to have a hitch installed on my '18 EX-L. He said: "You'll get a hitch that's just as good at a much better price." He was pretty straight up. Anyway, local U-Haul shop installed my 2" hitch for about $175. I had no concern with the foot activated lift gate sensor, since this is not on the EX-L. But the U-Haul folks make sure to let me know that their hitch would block the sensor if I ever decided to have it installed. Like OP, I wanted the hitch for a four bike rack (which I already owned). I don't plan to do any trailer towing.

As for rails, I ordered mine from Bernardi Parts for about $300 and installed myself using instructions found at Bernardi's site. It was very easy and had it done in under an hour.

I mounted Yakima SkyLine towers to the rails, using Yakima Landing Pad 19, and used Yakima RoundBars I had from my 2006 Honda Pilot. I carry two kayaks--one 12 foot and one 14 foot--with this. While the landing pads are permanently attached to the rails, I really like how easy it is to install or remove the bars with the SkyLine system. It is much faster than it was with the Yakima RailGrab towers I was using with my Pilot.

Here is a Yakima 90” skybox and Yakima racks and Yakima full tilt four bike system with 2” receiver. Fits cross country skis and downhill skis, fishing gear, backpacks etc. Yakima has a one key system to open everything so keeps your keys light and is very convenient. It took us many many hours to put all this together. I hope it helps! All after market. $400 for hitch with electrical ( they cut the bumper a bit).
