Hit & Run on brand new vehicle, possible total loss

Location- WI
‘23 Honda CRV Hybrid Sport AWD
Carrier- Erie Insurance

While I was at work someone back into my brand new vehicle. The drivers side mirror was on the street and there are two huge dents on the drivers door and left front fender.

Honda dealers and their body shops as well as 3rd party body shops are telling me they have no eta on this mirror. Parts are scarce. Obviously this is a problem.

Does anyone have an idea where I can source a driver side mirror without Blind Spot Monitor?

They are telling me that if the Honda dealer orders the part and after 1-2 weeks they come back saying there is still no eta, my insurance could look at a total loss claim. Normally they dj that if the part is no longer manufactured. This is a brand new vehicle and with the parts shortage I can’t even get it fixed if I wanted to right now.

My insurance gave me a repair check I cannot use. It’s worthless to me right now.

If a total loss claim is made wouldn’t that drastically increase my insurance rates? I also called Honda and have a case # with them.

Is there anything else I can/should do?

Yes, google it. I'm seeing a lot of listings.

This is total BS that they can sell a car that can't be repaired.

I did and can’t find the part that matches this specific vehicle. I only ound many other CRV mirrors.
It was a hit and run so your insurance should not go up. Hopefully you reported it to the police and have a report number.

If you have a loss depreciation waiver on your CRV then they should pay you full value for it if they deem it a loss. The problem is with the shortage it might be a bit of time for you to get a replacement.

I found it on ebay Here
you might need to change the cover with matching color
still better than total a vehicle for missing the mirror

They won’t give me more for diminished value. I wish. At this point I am not even sure what I can do. Trade and lose money or drive it as unsafe as it is.

I saw that too, but if I am reading it correctly it has the blind spot indicator which my vehicle doesn’t have. I also don’t know if the Honda body shop would want to buy something off of eBay.
would not think that would be totaled. a fender, mirror, and a pillar and door fix (does not look dented) , the fronts and rears of these cars are where the high costs are. get a rental from insurance and have it fixed.

Body shops are still struggling to get parts to repair vehicles. It is getting better, but still a lot of spot shortages.

My 2018 Accord has been in the body shop for over 6 weeks and is expected to take another couple weeks before it is ready. It was a driver that ran a red light and is at fault, of course they were uninsured too. Vehicle not totaled even though side airbags deployed. My insurance handles all the negotiations with the body shop and pays repair costs directly to the body shop... so I am not stuck in the middle of any haggling over parts, costs, etc.

This is precisely why I choose to keep the Accord when my wife got her new 2022 Lexus ES. I will let it go once we know that if we have to take a vehicle in for a repair, or to a body shop there will not be long lead times for repairs. I expect that will mean holding it until 2024 or so.
That is not totalled. Not even close. The good part is, with a hit/run, you have a WAY lower deductible. Usually around $100-$200.

Yeah that CRV is definitely repairable. Probably about $6K or so. I really cannot see the vehicle being totaled because a side mirror is on backorder.

But parts shortages mean delays in repairs, which is problematic for most owners. We planned for shortage like this by keeping an extra vehicle for the time being, and it has paid off for us.
I was surprised when they totaled my better half's Accord, it was only a few years old 2.0t with low miles. A large tree branch went through the windshield and she got a check for $26k.
Unless you got full coverage that wouldn't be a total loss by insurance standards. If no one was able to witness and give you license plate to report the "Hit and Run" there nothing one can do at this point. I would say unless salvage yard or eBay has that part it could be easy or hard to find that part to match. Did you check the location where you were to find if they had camera watching to identify the suspect vehicle that did this?

Good thought. There's cameras everywhere these days.
Far from a loss, It's parts availability that kills some cars.

Will the bodyshop release the vehicle with all the other parts repaired and when the new mirror becomes available to replace the ebay unit? I'd expect the mirror to be a fairly simple install with 3 nuts and power connector. Worse case is no power mirror while waiting for supply chain to catch up.

Since the mirror is a required safety feature, most likely not.

I use Erie and my agent and his assistant wanted me to pay my $1000 deductible. When I spoke to the Claims Adjuster she told me what you did. She actually had to call my agent to help them understand why LOL.

Something new that just came out with Erie that even my agent didn’t know about is if it’s a hit/run I would only have to pay $100.

I don’t get why agents are not given this info in time or sometimes……at all !

The mirror has no eta. National shortage.

That is something new to me and I handled claims for over 30 years. Usually your deductible is the same no matter how it happened. The only time you get a break is if you were rear-ended by another policyholder. In that case they know they will get it all back in subrogation so they waive it.

I'm still learning things..... ;)

Yessir. It is very similar, if not the same as, your uninsured motorist deductible. In essence, its often the same thing.

All that information is available to agents.

Have heard secondhand, I'll admit, that some companies reward agents who save the company money. In your example, you paying the $1,000 gives the company $900 free money, of which the agent may get 50%.
