Hiya,
Have a 2004 gen2 with a towing electrical problem, the lights go crazy when connected up (after working fine for the past three years of ownership). Tried the trailer on two other vehicles no problem, the trailer is also quite new.

So, looking at the lights behaviour it looks like a classic bad earth, since the problem seems to affect all the lights, often at the same time. Hitting the hazzard lights for example makes all of them flash/go dim etc. The install is a standard European permanently mounted external 7 pin socket.

Therefore, assuming that the CRV has a plug in harness somewhere, where do I start to look for the bad earth? Anyone else had a problem like this?
Thanks guys,
Ian

Fixed the problem a while back by adding a separate earth, (add another wire to the earth terminal running to one of the bolts holding the socket) rather than pull apart the interior trim to find the original earth. Been reliable since Oct 2015.

What you refer to as "earth" we (in the US) typically call "ground". If you want to know if you have a bad ground system on your trailer, replace all the incandescent bulbs with LED's. Boy, will they do some strange things if there is a bad/weak ground. DAMHIKT

The best ground system for any trailer is a direct connection from the fixtures to the vehicle's ground. In other words, don't ground each fixture to the trailer chassis (which is often the default) and then ground the chassis to the vehicle. Instead, run a ground connection (i.e. a dedicated wire) from the fixtures in such a manner that the ground wire connects to the plug that connects to the vehicle.

Good Ground System:

Fixture-1--------------------------------|
Fixture-2----Fixture-3----Fixture-4----|---Trailer Connector----Vehicle Connector----Vehicle Ground
Fixture-5--------------------------------|

Bad Ground System

Fixture-1----Trailer Chassis
Fixture-2----Trailer Chassis
Fixture-3----Trailer Chassis
Fixture-4----Trailer Chassis
Fixture-5----Trailer Chassis
Trailer Chassis----Trailer Connector----Vehicle Connector----Vehicle Ground
