For what little help it may be .........

I have a 2018 CR-V Touring.

I formatted a USB 2.0 and a USB 3.0 stick as NTFS and copied a song (.MP3 format) to each.
I selected "USB" from the "Source" menu and inserted both USB sticks into each of the USB ports in the front console.
Neither USB stick was recognized.
All I got was a message saying "no device present".

I then repeated the same process but this time with both USB sticks formatted as FAT32.
Both USB sicks were recognized in each of the the USB ports in the front console and both songs played just fine.

So, it appears as if USB 2.0 or 3.0 doesn't matter.
But the sticks need to be FAT32.
Totally what I would expect. FAT32 is pretty universal across different platforms. NTFS... not so much.

At some point in the future.. this will have to change as data sets continue to grow in size FAT32 simply will not be realistic in the future. But for now.. it is what it is and for music portability it works fine.
