How do I remove the sliding tray in the center console? 2022 hybrid

17534 Views 91 Replies 24 Participants Last post by  marg18
I picked up my new 2022 hybrid yesterday and love it... except for the console storage. HATE that part.

Is there anything that will turn that gaping hole under the armrest/cover into some kind of actually useable space? Is there some kind of 4 walled insert that can go in there maybe?

Open to any suggestions!

thanks!

EDIT to add: I bought some stuff to help me organize it in a way that better suits my needs, but I need to take the sliding trays out completely. I can slide them back and flip them up, but I can't figure out how to take them OUT. If anyone knows how, I'd appreciate the help!

I am assuming you mean that space directly below the padded arm rest and above the sliding tray. We have a 2021 EXL and we find that space just right for a cube style tissue box turned on its side. Easy to just grab a tissue whenever someone needs one. If I have to access the space below the tray just pull the tissue box aside.
Yeah, otherwise it is pretty useless.

This drove me insane, also. My solution was to get some craft foam and get creative. I love the end result. MUCH better use of the space down there.

That foam looks pretty deep - rather defeats the purpose of the (available) space in the armrest if all the foam does is occupy it?

But, it does look tidy :)

They need to BRING BACK THE SHELF! It was so convenient. I put a approx. 7 x 12" basket under the shelf and then divided it with small boxes, customized as needed. I kept the car for 13 years just because of that. Bought a 2019 in 2019 and I've hated it ever since. Would have sold it 2 years ago, but Covid hit, and I STILL hate it because of the inconvenience. I hope HONDA reads these. PS I even tried to have the entire armrest removed, but there's wiring for a/c, etc.
HONDA -- PLEASE Bring Back the Shelf!

This is the 2022. It's different than what people posted above. There are two trays. My hybrid touring is just like this.

2 trays- That's an improvement from my 2019 EX. And I see that the armrest goes, at least, far enough back so that you can reach into the "hole" -- Msg for HONDA-- Bring Back the Shelf!

I put a box/pack of baby wet wipers in the empty space between the slider tray and the armrest padding, it’s very often the first thing I reach for once in the vehicle from work and questionable shopping places… I’m glad it’s there actually, so I don’t need to take it out of any bins, fastest access when it’s basically exposed fully. (I miss the completely empty bottom centre console of the 3rd gens…)
Amen to that!!! Bring Back the Shelf, Honda!

Gosh, I don't know what I'd do without that extra storage space. Here are some of the items I keep there - keeping in mind I am a male who doesn't carry a handbag that women might otherwise keep the same items in it:
New face masks for people riding with me who forgot theirs and the places we go that require them
Notepad with a couple pens
Travel size deodorant, disposable razor, toothpaste and mouthwash in a small bag
Scissors (amazing how often I use them)
Pocket knife
Hand sanitizer
Hairbrush
TIcTacs/Tums/Rolaids
Emergency Contact list
Handiwipes
Dental Floss
Roll of quarters
Extra keys for house and other locations
Small flashlight

Granted, it's a mess down there - but no one sees it as long as the tray is covering it.
And how do you find anything when you need it. I anchored a box right behind the armrest/console and have to reach for anything. I find the console storage useless.

You're either off your medication or need to increase the dosage. And maybe you should sit in a car before buying it next time...

The OP was asking for advice. You're just complaining.

Suggest you contact Honda directly and give them feedback. This is an advice thread, not a platform for your ranting.

Thanks.

I like the two trays on my 2022. I think it's a big improvement than what I had in the 2019.
Is the OP still following, or did she lose interest 4 pages ago?

I'd like to know if she was able to remove the tray and put in her solution.

She may still be recovering in the hospital after trying to remove it with “extreme prejudice”.

Ditto..
I also wanted to know what happened.

Just out of curiosity, I tried to remove it and failed miserably. I gave up before my engineering brain felt bad and damage a perfectly working part.

I'm also an engineer. I had a hard time keeping myself from taking it apart too.

I’m an Industrial Eng — I did the cost / benefit analysis on removing it and then had a beer.

I lost interest.... ;)

Taking it apart just wasn't worth it.

It's still a black hole of space that has completely missed the point of functionality. I'll definitely be watching for someone to design a way to reconfigure it to something useable. 🤷‍♀️

Have you talked to any auto upholstery shops? They might be able to take out the tray without breaking it and/or fabricate something to make it useful for you. I go to a lot of car shows and see some neat custom work.
