The fuel door release cable has broken, the interior end came off. The fuel door can still be opened by grabbing the cable with a pliers, but it's my wife's car and she'd rather have it fixed.

The car is a 2014 CRV. Before I start exploring, can anyone here give me the steps to replacing this cable?

I just had the same thing happen. There is a you tube video of a quick fix that bypasses the latch, but I would rather fix correctly.

The cable is easy to replace....removing all the trim is a different story. The cable runs inside the cabin. You will need to remove the driver side cargo panel, front/rear door sill panels, lower B pillar panel and the driver side kick panel.
