How does my 2015 CRV determine oil life?

Just curious about how the "remaining oil life" percentage is determined. If it is mostly based on mileage I can't imagine how accurate it is. If it uses multiple inputs such as opacity, ambient temperature, engine vacuum, mileage etc., it may be more valid then I imagine.

But your links contradict that, the first one says:

The system counts down oil life based on engine operating conditions (both normal and severe). The on-board computer continuously monitors engine operating conditions such as speed, engine temperature, ambient temperature, time, and vehicle use to determine when an oil change and regular maintenance is necessary.
The second says:

The onboard computer system in your vehicle continuously monitors the engine operating conditions such as speed, engine and ambient temperature, time and the vehicle use. The system will count down the vehicles oil life based on these conditions to determine when an engine oil change and maintenance is necessary.

Like most similar systems, Honda's oil life monitor is based on an algorithm incorporating a number of factors influencing engine oil life. Among these are likely number of engine revs, number of cold starts, run time at varying coolant temperatures, etc. It does much more than simply count miles and hours.

Engine makers know that under ideal operating conditions (lots of steady state driving, no temperature extremes, no high power demands), motor oil will last for X miles. Starting with that premise, the oil life monitor deducts from X for less-than-ideal events, like cold starts. And of course, these algorithms are tested extensively to ensure they produce a reliable conclusion. Owners who have used oil analyzed almost always conclude the same thing.

Keep in mind the oil life monitor does not know what kind of oil is in the crankcase. Presumably, Honda's OLM assumes a Honda semi-synthetic is being used. Using a cheaper conventional oil would make the OLM optimistic and using a full synthetic the opposite.

The system has no idea if the MM reset has been pressed, *without an oil change performed*, thus no intelligence.

You may be aware that dealers often use deliberately the cheapest possible bulk oil, often the incorrect viscosity grade and *very often* do not even perform either the oil or filter change despite claiming such service completed.

The system does not know how many times the ADB valve has been engaged, flooding system with abrasive particles or even if the filter has a tear or blockage.

As said, it does not know if the wrong kind of oil has been used, or if antifreeze has mixed in due to a head gasket leak
