What's the trick to removing Gen 1 CRV Gear Knob?

I can loosen the gear knob itself but it's somehow attached to the fabric boot that covers the shaft and I don't want to force it and tear the boot which is still in perfect condition.

Since you mention the boot, can I assume you mean a manual transmission?

There is a solid ring inside of the shift boot that clips into "prongs" on the bottom of the shift knob.
Grab the ring and pull straight down away from the knob.
Then you just unscrew the shift knob.

Yes the manual, how much force is needed, can I put a pry bar into the gap between the ring and knob and carefully help it off?

Thanks Racoon!
Very easy didn't need much force, mine is slightly different but technique about the same, pic attached of mine.
