From my understanding, the name eCVT that Honda and Toyota gives are not really CVTs, correct? There's no belt like in a traditional CVT. It uses a combination of gears to create an infinite system? The name eCVT confuses a lot of people I suppose.

Therefore, this is an extremely reliable transmission if I were to buy a CR-V hybrid? I am looking for a very long-lasting vehicle and less trips to the dealership these days!

Yes, they are quite different from the belt-and-pulley CVT you describe. And yes, they are as close to bulletproof as is possible. They are also different from each other.

The Honda isn't really a transmission, in that there is no shifting of any kind. Two gears (by that I mean clogged metal disks) connect the engine to the generator. Three connect the engine and motor to the differential. None of these gears ever disconnect.

The only possible wear is the clutch that connects and disconnects the wngine from the differential. But it is computer controlled, and only connects when speeds are perfectly matched.
