Hi everyone

I have a 2006 Honda CRV 2.2CDTI and it runs absolutely fine, but when you first take off it kicks out a lot of black smoke!! I have checked the air filter and that's fine, and are trying to remove and clean injectors and the EGR valve in case its that, but they are both stuck and I just can't get them out. Before doing anything drastic like forcing/ breaking an injector, does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing the smoke that might be easier to fix? I have ordered some injector cleaner additive that is due to arrive today....

I should have also added that is has 175k on the clock, and service history. There are no running issues, its just the amount of black smoke and it only happens under heave acceleration, its fine when you're just pootling along.....

I have a 2005 2.2 iCTDi and it's always done this? Especially embarrassing when you go to overtake. We call it the "Cloaking Device" ;)

ON a more serious note, I have tried many different injector cleaning solutions and they make no difference to the issue. IN fact, the only difference any of them made was to my bank balance.

Eventually I took the Car to a specialist garage to have the injectors pulled and checked and they told me all was well...apart from my bank balance which was considerably depleted :)

It passes the MOT emissions test with a zero figure in all the test areas every year and it is now 14 years old. This leads me to the conclusion that this is not a problem.

If I drive at high revs for a sustained period of time the smoking eventually stops which might be why newer Diesel engines have Particle Filters fitted in an attempt to arrest this smoky behaviour?

I am not a mechanic nor do I work in the car industry at all, these are simply my observations and conclusions.

Thanks for your reply..... good to know it's not just me! Mine has also just passed its MOT with no problems, so emissions are fine.... I am about to put it up for sale as I've just bought a Volvo, and although the smoking has never bothered me as it runs spot on, I think a prospective purchaser might be more concerned!!

Diagnosing what is wrong with a diesel engine by the colour of the smoke falls into three basic colours. Blue, Black and White
Blue - The engine is burning engine oil.
1/ Worn cylinders or piston rings.
2/ Faulty valves or valve stem seals.
3/ Engine over full with engine oil
4/ Faulty injector pump/lift pump allowing engine oil to be mixed with the diesel
Black - This is due to an air to fuel ratio imbalance, either the fuel system is delivering too much fuel into the engine or there is not enough clean
air (oxygen ) a few things to look for:
1/ Faulty injectors (injectors need attention at about 100.000 to 120 000 miles) depending on service history and environmental conditions the engine has been used in.
1/ Faulty injector pump.
2/ Dirty air cleaner.
3/ Turbocharger or intercooler faulty - Check boost pressure.
4/ Problems within cylinder head, valves clogged up due to faulty EGR (exhaust gas recycling unit)
White - Normally means that the fuel injected into the cylinder is not burning correctly. The smoke will burn your eyes.
1/ Engine/pump timing out.
2/ Fuel starvation to the pump causing the pumps timing not to operate correctly.
3/ Low engine compression.
4/ Water/petrol in the fuel

If you mat a diesel, its normal to see black smoke. Pump throws the fuel to it under heavy acceleration. If it starts smoking like a broke stove all the time, then start looking for problems.

my car sometimes does this from take off, I never do long runs ,someone told me its the dpf clearing. Car is 39000 miles on clock ,services every 9-12 months by dealer. im second owner so might be normal ...not sure, colour of my smoke is dark...slightly .....never seen my dpf light come on. i go on motorway 2 times a year

First thing to look at if you get black smoke and loss of power is Boost Hose connections and the hoses for splits/holes, then the Intercooler and more expensive things...

99% of the time this will be the cause of power loss and black smoke... Usually you can hear a fairly loud hiss or even what appears to be amplified engine noise if the complete hose has come off.

Usually a 7mm socket or a flat blade screwdriver will be all you need to rectify this.

Mine has 180000 on the clock and emits no smoke at all but is very regularly serviced. Anyway onto your problem - As all above but have you tried to reset the engine management module - (sometimes called the factory reset)? You need an OBDII code reader to do it though or its a garage job.
It will continue to pass the MOT smoke test as long as it clears within a few seconds of the high rev up.
