Is this something that should be done to the struts/arms of the tailgate for maintenance? I have Krown Spray Can, WD-40, WD-40 Silicone Spray and Fluid Film at my disposal.

I haven’t looked that close but how you going to get lube to the internals?
I would be very hesitant in using WD-40, it’s a great solvent and water displacer but terrible as a lubricant.

Check out the owners manual. It may tell you what lubricant to use.

^ +1 about WD40 not being a lubricant

I only do the hinges w light touch of silicone spray

I wiped the strut in my 2011 manual open trunk and it got obviously harder to open all the way up.

now I stay away from it even during regular cleaning by the tailgate lenses

LPS lubricant is tops but you pay the price

I just wiped/cleaned mine down with a sparse amount of Autosmart silicone spray made it look cleaner and also acts as light lubricant,

Wipe down with a little silicone spray on the rag. Makes it look clean and doesn't gum up the works. Hinges get the spray direct, followed by a wipedown.
