We had the serpentine belt installed incorrectly and it stripped a strip from the ribs. this then wrapped itself behind the main pulley and caused a leak with the main seal. After removing the pulley I noticed that the seal was pushed in as far as it would go, approx 5-8mm in from the front of the block and could spin easily with my finger, I managed to get it out and refit a new one, but cant find any guides on how far it should push in. All guides I've read on crank shaft seals state it should go on as far as it goes, so this is what I done and it again spins freely inside the housing and continues to leak.

So my question is how far in should the seal sit? and how far in is too far?

Many thanks, Spriggsy

Can't answer your question...I think you need to get a service manual. Try a library (those will probably be generic a la Chilton's) or look to purchase a pdf online.
