Many trouble lights messages . . . .

2463 Views 18 Replies 13 Participants Last post by  JB in AZ
So the wife just informed me there are some "extra" warning messages and lights on the dash of her 2019 touring (extras ? ? ha ! :)
I go out and look .... TPMS, VSA, Hill start, Brake hold, Drive carefully system, Brake system. . . all come on one at a time & repeat.
?? Are these all controled by one module ? ? Which one ? Where ?
Checked the under hood fuse box bus bar . .good, checked under dash fuses . . . good.
Disconnected the battery for 2min . . . still on.
Looks like Honda service Dept
Yep still under warranty ! But what the hell is going on ?

First step, have the battery properly load tested. If you use the local auto parts store for this, I recommend testing it two times at two different auto parts stores, and see if you get consistent test results. Reason: attention to detail is important when testing a battery, not just slapping a tester on it and black boxing the results.

Starter batteries can be real squirrels under the hood... in that they can fail in both obvious and catastrophic ways but they can also look OK in a random test and yet still have a defect that they need to be replaced for. They also can test good one day, and yet have a catastrophic internal failure (usually a short or open) the next day... just due to random physics.

Yep, new battery time. It's been three years this year.

BTW, the lights come on because the various electronic modules need time to 'reset' themselves. This happens after a few miles...the light SHOULD go out by automatically.

If the voltage dips when starting subsequently, the lights will come on, again.

++++++++++

When replaced under warranty, the Honda batteries provided have extra capacity (CCA).
So, 2019s still use the 51R battery, right?

If true, and if it is the battery, definitely replace it with a 500 CCA 51R These cost a bit more than the 410-425 CCA, but they give you more reserve capacity.

I recently replaced mine on my 2017, and the new 500CCA Interstate from Costco tested new at 645 CCA and 800 CA, which is what you would expect to see on a 51R 500 CCA.

1. Zero wrong with battery . . . replace in Feb, JUST load tests fine, charge system is good to go 14.2 vt and uses a maintainer. Starts up with vigor !
2. the trouble screens are only repeating for the ABS / VSA / Brake / TPMS etc systems, over and over. not the whole car or other systems
3. no to the gas cap ? ? <<< not of this model . . . . . . again its seems to be focused on Brakes system related

What module controls all these? Are these a branch of but under the control of the main control board or does ABs module have control ?
Or are they on the same feed line, but have a common relay ? ( i checked the bus and fuses as okay )

OOPZ forgot to get below 150kb . . . . . . just one of six screens that repeat. Vehicle Car Automotive design Personal luxury car Auto part

Time to check for OBDII error codes. Not just the generic codes, but also the Honda specific ones.

And thats why it scheduled for Service @ honda dealer . . . thursday a.m. ;)

The VSA module, aka ABS, is responsible for the ABS, VSA, Brakes, TPMS and parking brakes. But you also have electric power brakes, electric power steering and electric power throttle via the PCM. They are all interconnected via the CAN bus and have interrelated functionality when it comes to things like stability control. I'm afraid this is not simply a fuse but more likely a problem with one of the modules or a sensor like a wheel speed sensor. Even the camera and radar are tied to these systems for auto braking. This really requires proper diagnostic equipment and a knowledgeable tech.

Be sure to let us know what the dealer finds. :)
Happened to my 2017 EX. Replaced battery. Recurred 2 weeks later. Brought to dealer. They replaced fuel injectors. Covered under extended emissions warranty here is Massachusetts, otherwise would have been $1,500.

Speaking from experience with a very similar 2016 Civic Touring: a single fuse element can cause all of these lights/message/warnings. In our case, it was because of an improperly installed harness--a bracket not fastened to the right inner fender--during a repair due to rat damage, that had dangled into an accessory drive pully and abraded until the power to the VSA module (via a 40A fuse element on one of the "multi-fuse blocks") shorted, failing the fuse. Once the fuse was replaced, the harness repaired, and correctly fastened to structure, the problem was resolved. As you point out, VSA operating correctly is key to many of these other systems operating correctly or at all.
2017 EX-L Turbo with Nav. There are several causes, two of which are Battery issues or Fuel injector issues. For those who have not yet encountered the myriad of warning lights, when the major warning issue lights are on, even though the CRV may continue to run OK, the remote start will be disabled until those major warning lights are permanently cleared.
Got a good laugh today . . . and "FIX" didn't cost a dime.
Dealer called and said he had some openings a day early if i wanted, i said, "on the way"
All it took was a control module "reset" function. Service advisor put the reader to the door to read car id bar code. Hooked up a couple wires
under the hood, and found the + post clamp loose ! (he straightened & tightened clamp) Punched in some codes for the reset function.
Waited 30 seconds, shut it off, disconnected and said "All done", and it was all back to normal !

Then we talked to determine what caused this issue. This is the best it gets and it is what it is, I didn't get all the tech jargon.
After I spilled some info and called the wife, Sherlock & Dr Watson put this together. Wife had a quick connect/disconnect installed for the battery tender
last week saturday. The installer some how bent the clamp going to the +battery post. And it made contact for a while, and she got home not knowing.
But Monday a.m. we wash the cars and she decides to "dust" under the hood. While this is in process the dust cloth / shop rag goes over the red battery
terminal cover . . . . . . just enough to knock it loose and the battery disconnects. While I called on phone from dealer she states she remembers
putting it back on and pushing it down . . . . . she didn't think much of it. And she did made a short trip to store and notified me of all the lights on when she
returned that day ( let it go . . it is what it is )

Thus the terminal was off just enough time to trip all the warnings as "due to low / lost voltage" Enfotainment system went out also tripped by the anti theft thing.
So it was a LOW VOLTAGE sensing thing, same signal as if the battery had actually died.
I do like that it was a cheap fix. And Service Advisor said they get a couple of these per month ! He said the give away would have been the
Hill Assist start and Brake hold . . . .

So, yes wife shouldn't touch . . . but it is her car, I'm only allow to touch if it needs something.
The up side is she was/ is an Executive Chef. . . . I'll deal with the trade off :)

Thanks for all the inputs . . . . . . .

Glad its sorted.

WIll lock this now, but if you have any further info to add, just message any of the Mod team and we will re-open for you OP.
Great news! One of our staff members always says to do the TWIST TEST (testing the tightness of the clamps on the battery terminals) before calling a battery dead!
