Max rooftop capacity of a 2006 CR-V? Asking since a friend plans to install strong aftermarket crossbars and mount a 125 pound roof top tent.
The 2006 CR-V manual has a limit but doesn’t state whether it is static (parked) or dynamic (moving). I know some third party roof rack makers have their own ratings, which most likely not override Honda’s limits.
I hope Honda comes back with some useful info. Will post when they do.
Those company that make the roof rack should tell you the weight limits capacity. V's AFAIK doesn't come factory rack so that is why you won't get a weight capacity.
I'd hazard a guess at 50kg dynamic which is 110lbs, same as the mk3 and same as a lot of cars. The static load will be plenty. I have a 48kg rooftop tent on a set of 50kg bars, I way in at roughly a 100kg and I sleep up there with dogs and equipment no problem.
The roof structure itself can support the full weight of the car for an unfortunate case of a rollover accident.
The weight limits given are to keep the center of gravity low during high speed driving. If your platform supports 300-400 lbs the roof can also support it while stationary.
Obviously the best are the OEM bars from Honda but the are a lot of pennies unless you get lucky on Gumtree or Facebook or wherever. Next up for me would be Thule, again big bucks but you could get lucky or at least are more likely to get lucky second hand. I got Cruz bars, mid range price, work as they should just don't look as good and even though I paid for locks, the locks I could rip off by hand.
You get what you pay for.
