Was under the 2008 CRV with 107k miles yesterday to do drain and refill of some fluids and noticed the deterioration of this part. At first I thought it was the catalytic converter but i think and hope this is just the heat shield surrounding the converter. Can someone confirm what it is?

There is no check engine light but i do hear a rattle especially when idle.

I remember getting the heat shield fixed or replaced around 8 years ago. If i put it the car up on jacks, what is your rating of this as a DIY from 1 to 10, 10 most advanced?

Yes, that is the Cat Con heat shield. You need to tighten those clamps.

The heat shields tend to rot near their bolts, and then rattle. The problem is, you cannot usually remove them, because ONE or MORE bolts remain intact. Figures.

If this were my vehicle, I would not be looking to replace the heatshield. More clamps, or adjusting current clamps, to get rid of rattle would be my path to resolve.
