Just became a new(to me) 2005 CR-V owner, and so far liking the car. Only weird thing is a strange thumping/rattling sound coming from the front suspension that seems to occur at random parking lot speeds. I was told this is a common CR-V problem relating to the steering rack & pinion, is this true? It's a hollow-sounding thumping noise almost like a suspension bushing that's loose.

Hello, could be the skid shield or tirewell shield could be loose, and when you turn your tire rubs on it. That was happening to me and I thought it was something major.

I believe you are thinking of the common noise coming from the sway bar's end links. As a diagnostic, you could un-bolt them and drive the car (slowly) over some speed bumps.

Another common fault in the front end are the forward lower control arm bushings.

Steering racks are not a big issue on Generation 2 Vs.
