New Door Key

541 Views 8 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  Hazendeuce
Hi all,
I recently purchased a used 2008 EX-L.
It only has one key that remotely unlocks and starts the car - it looks to be a cheap replacement FOB

I wanted to get some door-unlock keys made, but don’t have a copy to go off of. Is this possible?

Thanks!

Talk to honda service manager, I'm certain there's probably a chip in the keys or talk to a lock business that programs keys and fobs. I had a Safe and Lock company supply the proper fob and program it

Thanks!
So even a door-unlock key will have a chip? I won’t be needing these replacements to start the ignition, just unlock the doors in case I lock myself out.

I plan to get another ignition-FOB as well, I just don’t like that my current FOB won’t unlock the door manually - only by button.
The chip is for the ignition

Is it a standard Honda Key that looks like this, or can you start your car using the remote? (not the key)

I would go to an automotive locksmith. They can cut you keys and program them to your car for less than the dealer.

If you are a do it yourselfer, you can buy a CK100 key programmer and program them to your car yourself.

Having a locksmith do it is about the same price as the programmer so there is no price reason to buy the programmer; Other than you have a nifty key programmer.

I would think remote start would have had to be an original item, not all trim levels had it

The key I have is one with the buttons, that starts the car and locks/unlocks.

what I want is the standard key that just unlocks the drivers door, I just don’t have an original to compare it against.

I was told earlier today that a dealership can look up my VIN and have another key made - I’m not looking forward to how much that’s gonna cost.😭

What you have in your possession, if it looks like the one shown by DashingDaryl, then it is essentially an original key for the vehicle. If it is not a Honda OEM key, I would definitely pay Honda or a locksmith that does Honda smart keys, and get one.

For a door key only, they can cut a key using the one you have in your possession, but being a security style metal key you may need a specialist locksmith to do it.

You know, you can buy reconditioned smart keys online from various merchants, and then take it to a locksmith that does Honda smart keys and they can cut it and activate it for you.

I seem to recall that my 2008 came with two smart keys with the buttons and then also a dumb key that was for valet use only. You could get one of those if all you need is a key to unlock the door and start the vehicle. Note these still have a chip in them and have to be paired to the vehicle. example picture of the valet key:

If you want a truely dumb key that will only open the door, then they do sell blanks for that. Example (for which I cannot vouch for, only that I found it online) here. You still will need a locksmith to cut it for you though.

Here is a short youtube from a registered locksmith that describes the differences between the master key (the smart key with buttons) and the valet key:

Great info, thank you all!

The key that I have seems to be an off-brand replacement for the original.

It doesn’t have a Honda logo, or the trunk-open button.

VALET KEY, that’s the term I was looking for, I want to get one of those asap to open the door. Then another FOB that’s able to start the car as backup.

I appreciate all of your info, gang! This car is high mileage, but I’m excited to get things fixed on it and learn more about maintenance as a whole.
