Hello,

Been lurking a long time, but didn’t join till I bought one, so I was at the dealer a week ago, asked him about the EX model and he told me that Honda no longer makes the EX model cause the short supply of chips and other things, they are only making the EX-L and Touring the most popular models has anyone heard of this? Well anyway, I went with the EX-L he told me everything coming in has been sold, every hybrid and crv on the lot sold. so he went to some office to look what’s on the horizon there is no date for production yet but it’s on the list to be made, longest date he said about August maybe earlier. About 1k over msrp and a 1k package of accessories not to bad compared to what’s out there. Put 1k down, credit check, signed papers, now just waiting.

Wher are you located? My local dealer has 2 EX-L Hybrids on the lot for sale at MSRP.

Black they only had that, Red and Sonic Grey Pearl for + 325 in line for production that are not taken yet. The other colors weren’t even on the list.

Honda suspending production of the EX trim is not something that I have heard. It is probably an exaggeration on the part of the dealer. I doubt they have removed the EX from their model line up.

Dealers of course want the higher trim models, as they have a bit more profit margin and more likely to sell with a markup above MSRP. I know Honda dealers used to not have any say in what vehicles were allocated to them, but maybe this too has changed in the current climate and this dealer has asked that only higher trims be allocated to them.

That said, if I was producing expensive products like a modern motor vehicle and I have a choice of what trim levels to use my severely short parts supply, I would favor the higher trim levels. So I guess this is not a surprise in that regard, but also not something that will be permanent.

Something about this is counter intuitive though.. because an EX-L requires more feature rich components than an EX or LX. So I would think the production lines would be more prone to shortages for the higher trim models.

Funny - I bought a new Touring in December but really wanted an EX-L. At the time nobody had any EX-Ls and a couple of dealers told me the same story, except that time it was "they've stopped making EX-L and are only making EX and Touring".

I think Honda is still making all of them, but the dealer allocations may be skewed by the way Honda sees the local demographics - i.e. if you live in an affluent (read, "expensive") area then Honda ships local dealers a lot of Tourings and not so many of the others. If you live in a less affluent area, you get all the LX models, etc.

The moral is that you might have to drive to a dealer far away to find what you want.

Sounds like it is a popular meme at dealerships now if there are no open slots in the assembly queue for that dealer to pre-sell to owners. :)

Like so many memes though... just because they echo it, does not mean it is true. :p

My guess is Honda has always run their trim levels in batch runs through the factories, and it's just owners and dealers never saw this because there was always enough float from accumulated production on their temporary storage and dealers all got a mixed allocation each month off of this ongoing inventory float. But now days... with them effectively selling "a vehicle assembly slot" on the production floor in a pre-sale to a buyer, there is more visibility to dealers and owners as to what is moving through the assembly lines on any given week.

So I bet the meme shifts week by week, depending on what the dealers see when they do a lookup for assembly allocations for that dealership. One week it will be no EX being produced, next week, no EX-L being produced, next week no Touring, etc. etc.

So that’s what happened to me haha, because there were no EX on the horizon on their assembly allocation, just to keep me there and buy from them they gave me that story. I can understand that at least the didn’t take an arm and a leg. The manager also mentioned he used to get 300 to 350 cars a month but now only gets about 150 new cars a month. That’s why some dealer start gauging to make up for lost revenue for less cars being made.

I just scanned my dealers CR-V page to see what they have incoming.

They have 11 coming soon and all of them are either EX-L or Touring as far as the hybrids go. The touring are listed at about $1,500 more than what I paid for my touring in October.

In NYC, most dealers ask for $3000 to $5000 above MSRP, I just got the EX-L Hybrid last week, pay for $500 deposit and wait for a month to get it. There are no EX in NYC as far as I know.

Doug Smith at Patty Peck Honda is a stand up guy that I’ve bought over a dozen cars from. They don’t gouge with above sticker pricing. He told me he’s got many sold for July delivery. Call him.

Carvana has 3 hybrids for sale at the moment but that could change quickly.

I put a deposit down for a Hybrid Touring. It was being built in the factory allocated to the dealership and would be here mid June. But they added $3K of dealer add-on's that just turned me off. I ended up getting a Hyundai Tucson Hybrid SEL for $9K less (at MSRP). I had a 2021 Hybrid EX-L that was totaled on Thursday. I drove home the Tucson on Wed because whoever ordered it 4 months ago changed her mind and I was at the right place at the right time and bought it. My kids don't ever remember me not driving a Honda. So this will be a test... I don't plan to keep the Tucson for more than 5 years. When the car market goes back to "normal", I'll be back driving a CRV... Unless the Tucson wins my heart over...

Dealership said only EX-L and Touring are being built. EX-L won't be here until Sept/Oct.

I miss my heated steering wheel and leather seats, but in exchange, I have panaromic sunroof, hands-free power liftgate, wireless charging and wireless Apple Carplay, remote starter from app (free for 3 years), maintenance free (oil changes and tire rotation for 3 years). I'm not trying to sell the Tucson. I will always be a CRV gal. I'll be back! p/s It does not ride as smoothly as the CRV..

I can understand why decided on the Tucson, they aren’t as popular as Honda or Toyota but both the Hyundai and Kia hybrids interior for 2022 are packed with technology and upgrades at the same msrp the makers set. Same with the regular rouges and the cheap quality Jeep Compass all have better interior than the 22 Hondas and Toyotas they know a majority of us will buy either granted the other brands I mentioned are probably on their new updated generation and we are still in gen5 but we still buy ‘em like hot cakes shortages or not. Some dealers know we will.
