OK, I'll admit it, I was slightly dismayed that what I felt was a very helpful thread on American Honda Sales that I started yesterday was closed in a very short time: (as rocky so artfully commented) "..This thread like so many here, has gone way off the road, into the woods and isn't going to get out anytime soon."

While I was disappointed in the closed thread, more importantly, it motivated me to put into words some things I have been feeling about the 5th Gen Honda Owners Club.

This "club" has become painful to participate in...actually, sadly, it has been this way for some time now. I bet many of us feel this way.

What is causing this? One guess is that many posters here attack each other, rather than discussing the ISSUES. When replying to another club member, I would ask that we all PLEASE read what we have typed BEFORE hitting the "submit" button. Read it out loud and see how it sounds, and how you would feel after reading it if it were a reply to your post.

There really is no valid reason to antagonize each other here. Take it to a PM if you feel it is absolutely necessary...

It is really OK, and encouraged, to have a difference of opinion, but PLEASE let's not attack each other.

At this point, I think that The Club "...has gone way off the road, into the woods....."

PLEASE, let's all work to make it a more enjoyable place to exchange thoughts and ideas.

Thank you.

I for one completely agree and have been feeling the same for awhile. I'm one of those folks that constantly report personal attacks and probably have been responsible for a few threads closing and/or people getting light bans. I've posted MANY threads about modifications, tweaks, ideas and otherwise things-not-OD and it just keeps getting lost in the noise...

What is impossible to measure is those that have stopped posting or never will due to the lack of any desire to participate in a negative atmosphere.

The cynic in me thinks that, on an ad supported forum, we are probably killing it in terms of revenue due to all the people that come to watch and participate in the bickering and attacks, so the monetary incentive is quite low for a harder line approach. This forum will totally die off once the OD issue gets fixed or the next gen CRV comes out because the base of discussion about mods, maintenance and information is non existent and as long as the behavior of many continues or is allowed to continue, people are severely disincentivized from participating.

Most people go to forums for the following reasons:
- See if anyone from the internet is having the same problem with their cars as they do.
- Seek help for accessories.
- Find prices others have paid for.
- Interact with fellow car owners.
- Trolling.

Sadly, trolling seems to be present in EVERY thread. You can deal with personal attacks. You can't deal with trolls. It's their whole life mission to troll with multiple accounts. Google their user name and you'll see the same names popping up in many social media and other forums repeating the same comments over and over. It's like when someone has it for an internet seller on amazon and you'll see MANY "1 post reviews" from non-verified buyers talking about the same thing thus dropping the rating for the product 1 star or more.

That's the main reason why i stopped posting for so long. It's not the personal attacks. It's the trolls.

You could be right about the trolls.

I try not to put a label on it, and just ask that members be considerate and try to word their replies so they are not personal attacks.

We have a certain member to thank for that. Your thread started nicely until he posted crude bathroom humor and brought OD into your Sales thread when no one had before. His post is now deleted.

I read the part I bolded several times before I totally understood what you were saying. heh.

I agree with your post, mnestrud.

Thank you!

How do those of us in your first 4 groups distinguish between trolls and members who just enjoy being contrary? My father in law would ALWAYS take the contrary opinion in virtually every discussion. He enjoyed it. It DID provide some interesting conversations. This was WAY before Al Gore invented the Internet. :rolleyes2:
This was WAY before Al Gore invented the Internet.
"But as the two people
who designed the basic architecture and the core protocols that make the
Internet work, we would like to acknowledge VP Gore's contributions as a
Congressman, Senator and as Vice President. No other elected official, to
our knowledge, has made a greater contribution over a longer period of
time." Bob Kahn & Vint Cerf aka the inventors of the internet.

Why do you think they call them Al Gore-ithms?,,,,,,,

For those of us involved with what was ARPANET, at the time we knew what his contribution was but unfortunately the press loves sound bites so they ran with the simplest version of events. If it was not for Gore the Internet as we know it today would not have reached this point for several more years. Anyway back to the thread sorry for going off topic JB.

Rob
Maybe they could move to the Off topic section then close and bout it outt here.. or start it in the offtopic then it will be more on topic then closed.

Google Translate does nothing for this ^^ :Surrender:
... back to the thread sorry for going off topic JB.

Rob
It was my fault this thread went off topic, Rob. I wanted to inject a little bit of humor into the thread.

IMHO, it's this kind of discussion that friends would have while sitting around, or during a meal out, and is a very important part of those friendships that can be, and are critical to keeping things civil and welcoming here. There is a real problem when (in just two hours) a topic goes from "CR-V sales continue to be excellent!..." to "YOU are nothing more than a troll. Thank God that you are not one of the folks that spent $30-35000 and got a defective auto. Pray that karma doesn’t jump up and bite you..." No one wants to be a part of that discussion, and it drives folks away. Posters Chrisss and mnestrud both made comments addressing this earlier in this thread.

Thanks again for all the friendships I have made here!

I agree and when I see any posts from that person I just skip over them. When I first joined the forum I actually thought his stuff was useful not anymore.

I agree. It's just become so...unpleasant. These days, I mostly just check to see if the map update thread has anything new. I miss the early days (for me, that is)...which weren't all that long ago.
I too don't visit often - I do quick searches for new info, resolutions, assisting others. If a post has gone downhill, I log off - have better things to do w/my time.
There is enough abuse on television and in almost all other areas of social media.

Remember when our parents said (for those of you older, like me) " if you don't have something nice to say, don't say anything at all "?

I rarely read even the news online. I might be wrong, but if everyone had to talk to each other face to face, would we be more considerate?

ok, off my soapbox now.

btw - did a 6 hr trip this past wkend - 90% interstate.... one way - ECON used. return trip - no ECON used. difference for me was 1.2 MPG better w/no ECON.

Not any more.
The most pathetic move I've seen used on here during heated arguments is when people start laying out their "credentials" (which, because this is the internet and no one knows who you are anyway, can never be proven or dis-proven), for example:

- "I used to be a Honda dealer/salesperson so take it from me..."
- "I have PhD in physics/chemistry/auto mechanics, and I can tell you there's no way that's possible!"
- "I've been driving Hondas for 50 years and I've NEVER EVER seen this happen"
- "I am the son of Soichiro Honda!"
When I'm talking about some technical area in which I have no special knowledge, I like to preface it with "In my capacity as a medieval historian..."
