when you hear the string of beeps, it means the auto-lock did not engage. In my experience, the person who has the fob has to be the last one to close the door, when you do this, you will hear one beep then another beep when you walk farther. Another thing is make sure your fob is not embedded deep in a purse covered by all kinds of electronics, it will hinder the signal.
Questions about walk-away automatic door lock
I recently bought a year-old 2017 EX-L CR-V and haven't quite figured out the walk-away door lock. I know it's an option in the settings, and it seems to work after I've selected it, but at times it doesn't seem to be working. I'm wondering if manually using the lock button on the remote fob disables the walk-away function? Also, sometimes when I walk away I hear a fast beep-beep-beep about 8 or 10 times and I don't know what that's about: it's not that I've left the keys in the car. Any help with this much appreciated.

Don't have to be the last to close the door if you have the fob, but you can't walk away from the car until everything is closed or else you'll hear the fast beep and the autolock won't engage. I found that just sticking around the car a moment while passengers unload keeps the autolock working.

Shut it off, then wait for the honda dashboard animation to end then exit and walk away and it will be flawless everytime.
If you break barrier before that stops you get the beeping alerting you it didnt arm
Sometimes I don't hear the second beep. Either to noisy or I wasn't paying attention. I started using the finger on door handle to lock.
The previous posts about conditions for the autolock seem accurate. My most frequent issue is the tailgate: you have to be quite close to it while it closes or the autolock won't engage and then you get the series of beeps.
It seems to me that if it is smart enough to warn you (with a set of beeps) that you are walking away without locking, it should be smart enough to auto-lock.

We've frequently started walking away while the hatch was still closing only to get three beeps so I've wondered about that. I *think* the design principle was to a) verify no keys inside vehicle, and b) verify one key outside vehicle.

Look in the manual, it will tell you most of what has been posted. If you are outside the 10ft when the system is ready to lock the doors, (all doors fully closed) then you will get the rapid multi beeps and no lock. This usually happens with the tail gate as it slowly closes. It can also happen if the fob has left the 10ft area before all Passengers have closed their respective doors. You will get used to it. I personally would like the rapid beeps to be louder, but "it is what it is".
Like “cruiser” said, the person with the FOB can’t leave the 10 foot perimeter before all doors are closed. If the FOB leaves that 10 foot perimeter, auto lock with fail.
Auto lock will also fail if a door is opened after the 1st beep.
