I have a 2001 CR-V that had the axles replaced by the Honda dealer about a year ago. At the last oil change (at the Honda dealer), I was told that the differentials were leaking at all four seals. I mentioned that they had just replaced the axles. I was told that unless the axle seals are damaged, they do not replace them when they replace the axles. This is a 2001 car with 150k miles. How could they not need replaced with the new axles.

My question: what is the norm?

The norm is replace the seals only if they are leaking. Since the seals are on the trans or diff and not on the actual axles they are normally not touched when replacing an axle.
