My wife has a 2011 CRV and I have a 2015 Mazda CX-9. Currently, both of them have a bare roof.

We are looking at adding a roof system to the CRV for two purposes:

1) the CRV is used for family vacations. With a bike rack in the trailer hitch, we are looking to add a luggage box/bag on top at some point.
2) kayak/canoe - we may want to carry 1/2 to the river/lake (short trips) at some point.

But, it doesn't have to live up there 365 days per year. In the winter, I would likely remove as much as possible.

Ideally, I would have a system that could (if I wanted) eventually transition to the Mazda or her next CRV.
- Is there an easy system (towers/rails) that is easy to mount on other SUVs? Yakima/Thule?
- if I go with the OEM side rails, I think I can get a set of Thule/Yakima cross rails that can easily be used on other OEM side rails?
