While driving our 2004 CRV the speedometer pegged out at 140 and that is where it stays. Is the cable broken? If so, where is it located? I have been able at times to turn the switch on and off several times and the needle turns back to zero but when you drive it again it goes back to 140. Any input would be appreciated. thanks.

Yea, new gauges are all electronic these days. There is just a wire that plugs in the back and a motor that moves the dial. Probably a short in the electrical somewhere or something wrong with a range sensor.

Clean your battery contacts. It may help or it may not, but they probably need it anyways.
Also check the main grounding connection points (one from the neg bat terminal to the frame and the other is from the frame (usually close to the top of the radiator) to the engine.
"check the condition of the No. 9 (10A) fuse (under the hood) and the No. 10 (7.5) amp fuse under the dash."
That is from : http://www.crvownersclub.com/forums/27-miscellaneous-general-cr-v-discussions/15693-2002-cr-v-speedometer-acting-weird.html
Put "speedometer problems on a honda 2004 crv" without the quotes in an Internet search engine for more ideas and PLEASE post back what the solution was for you, as it could really help others.
Thanks,
