HI all,

I recently purchased a 1999 CRV. Its got 110km on it and is manual transmission. Over the last couple of days something has started really whining and squealing whenever the car is driving or idling, it sounds like a belt. Whenever I engage the clutch this noise goes away and everything sounds fine. Any thoughts or ideas on what this might be?
Thanks,
Anthony

Worn clutch or broken springs on a pressure plate? although that would be a REALLY premature failure in a CR-V.

I thought a throw out bearing would be noisy with the pedal in...

Throughout bearing is a likely suspect. Check to make sure the clutch is totally disengaging when it is released. Adj if necessary.
