I love my 2017 CR-V, and I also surf a lot. I'm having an issue with the smart key and feeling secure when I'm in the water. I used to bring a spare key with me in the water, but with a smart key that's impossible. I was looking into a hitch lock box, but with the key so close to the trunk the car would "sense" the key nearby and anyone could open the trunk, even with the key locked in the hitch.

Any ideas from other surfers out there?

Try putting the key fob in a metal can, like a BandAid box. If sealed tight it should block the signal from reaching the receiver inside the car.

How about putting the fob in a zip-lock bag and taking it with you? That's what we do for kayaking and canoeing. If you don't trust a zip-lock bag, try a Loksak dry bag made for this purpose from REI.
