If you push the button in, a light illuminates, correct? This is to warn you that the overdrive is off, which will reduce gas mileage, but it allows the engine to work 'harder'...good when pulling a trailer or when climbing mountains, as it reduces unnecessary shifting.

So, Off would be the normal or default condition.

Typically you don't need it (Over Drive) engaged (light not illuminated) until highway speeds. ie 55+mph. When you have O/D off, its to reduce excessive shifting on the trans around town or accelerate/decelerate between red lights.

You can leave the system on and never give it a second thought, some people pay more attention to what or how their vehicle is driving and monitor O/D. Personally, it would leave it alone until you're in the city, stop and go or winter driving.

I'm sure someone is going to have a much different opinion which will work easily as good as mine.

A friend of mine told me to turn off overdrive (clicked button and light illuminated) for towing. I have never towed anything behind my crv for the years I have owned the vehicle; I have been driving with the light not illuminated (so overdrive on) for years now and have just ignored it.
