Typically you don't need it (Over Drive) engaged (light not illuminated) until highway speeds. ie 55+mph. When you have O/D off, its to reduce excessive shifting on the trans around town or accelerate/decelerate between red lights.
You can leave the system on and never give it a second thought, some people pay more attention to what or how their vehicle is driving and monitor O/D. Personally, it would leave it alone until you're in the city, stop and go or winter driving.
I'm sure someone is going to have a much different opinion which will work easily as good as mine.
