My wife and I drive a 2001 CRV with 5 speed mt and are considering buying a small camper. I'm looking at installing a class III hitch rated at 3500 towing and 350 tongue weight. I've read a lot of differing opinions about towing capacities of CRVs, but most of those pertain to 2004 or newer. We are interested in people's actual experiences towing with a CRV like ours (not sure what year the CRV towing rating increased) in determining the size/weight of camper we can consider. Also, would I be wasting money installing the class III hitch that is rated considerably higher than our car's rating?

I put a curts class 3 on my 98 5 speed. I did not like the little
Dinky one that most people have installed. It was an easy install
But took two people..the hitch was very heavy. Search crv trailer hitch install on you tube
To watch install on a 99 or 01 crv

Towing limit is 1,000 lbs in N.A. on a Gen.1 CRV (1997-2001)

With my (auto) 2000 CRV, I towed a 1,500 lb trailer + fully loaded, with 3 people & dog without incident for many years.

Yes it was very much over limit and potentially dangerous, but never felt too heavy, brakes worked fine and I never had engine/transmission issues in the 11 years I owned it.
