Hi CRV family,

First time poster and glad to just find this awesome forum! Quick summary : The wife and I bought a new 2018 CRV-EX in December when our family car crapped out. LOVING it thus far and think it'll be the perfect car for us and our future children. The wife just got an amazing job opportunity across the country, so we've got a 1500 mile trek across the US to our new home. We've got a bit more than we think we can fit into the loaded CRV, so I'm exploring other options. We leave in about 2 weeks which is very stressful, so I was hoping from quick advice for you all. I see it as I have two main options and I'd love your input if you have some insight:

1) Install a trailer hitch and rent a small Uhaul trailer for the drive. What hitch would be best and what's the ideal price point and place to order it? I wouldn't install it myself as I have no experience or comfort with cars, so what would it cost for a decent mechanic or dealership to install it for me? The Curt Hitch #13397 seems like a popular option here?

2) Once I have a hitch installed, I assumed a luggage rack / hitch attachment might be a possibility. If I could stack and strap 2 bins on a rear rack, I might be able to make it all fit and work, and avoid dragging a trailer. Plus we could keep the rack for future trips. If this seems like a good option, what rack is popular here? It's easy to take on and off one I have the hitch installed? What price point should I expect for this unit?

In your shoes, with limited time to get organized and packed for the trip, I would go to Uhaul and have them install the hitch. You can set it up on their website. I recommend you get one of the 2 inch receivers as this in the long haul is a better set up for bike racks, trailer carriers etc.

I just ran a trailer hitch and wiring set up and it was $342 plus sales tax installed. Now I've bought a luggage carrier once. Used it once....
Even the cheapest Harbor freight jobs are $60 then you have to find somewhere to store it at your destination.

You can rent a 4x8 uhaul and then just drop it off at another uhaul location. Cost for a one way probably more than local. I've had to do emergency one way trips before, and would encourage you to take the simple low stress approach even if it costs a few more $$$ than another approach that is cheaper.

How about a UHaul van pulling a UHaul trailer with the CRV on it. Way less strain on the CVT in your CRV. Just a thought.unno: Won’t have to guess if the CRV is overloaded

I just had a UHaul hitch installed on my 2018 CRV-EXL, and will be picking up a 4x8 trailer for my move from AZ back to Texas. I have never pulled a trailer before, so I'm at least happy to start with the smallest of them. The bulk of my belongings were moved back home in January by my brother in law. I decided to give away all of my large heavy furniture, but it's been unbelievably hard to do. I was stunned. So many people had sent me messages about friends houses that burned almost to the ground who really needed everything, or that they had nothing and really needed anything..etc. Until I told them the teak entertainment center and teak desk were 15 years old. Then suddenly, nobody was in urgent need of furniture. Go figure. Oh well....life goes on. To Tarin (cool name BTW) I wish you the best of luck with your move, and really good luck getting things loaded through that 3 foot high door! Thank goodness my neighbors next door have two young and wirey sons who will be loading the heaviest of my totes to the front (?) of the trailer!

Many years ago I moved from Southern California to Indiana, a distance of about 2,000 miles.
I didn't have very much stuff, but it was more than would fit in a trailer my vehicle could tow.

I ended up renting a 15' U-Haul truck and full sized car trailer so all four wheels of my vehicle were off the ground.
It is more expensive to return the vehicle at a different location than where you pick it up, and to some extent it depends on where you are going as to how much the one way costs.
