Was just wiring in a Dashcam and came across this in the drivers footwell, under the steering column

its a panel with a fingerknob to release it and it drops down and inside attached to the panel is a white plastic cloth

What an earth is it intended for / to do ?

On a closer look seems to be directly below the steering column universal joint, so may be to catch extra lubrication from that ?
Pad doesn't cover or come into contact with anything above it

I'm still thinking it's to absorb sound.
If it was to absorb dripping lubricant, then changing it would be listed under a maintenance schedule somewhere.

It's definitely sound deadening. Same stuff is in the door panels and rear tailgate trim. It is 3M thinsulate or similar.

Yes just insulation. Our '06 has a similar under-dash panel with some sound deadener on it.

Don't overthink anything! ?

It is so you don't get your toes caught up in all that mess.
