Recently bought 2000 Cr-v 285 000 kms on it and reads a P0420 Catalyst code. Heats up and blows out white smoke after driving a short time. No coolant in oil, not sure what to test. Compression?

Compression for sure. But, is it white or grayish white? Trending toward gray might be oil burning. If it's a nice fluffy white, it's coolant and a head gasket issue. High mileage, so it's an educated guess.

Is it losing any coolant??
Pull the spark plugs and look at them. Quick and easy to do. Might give you a good clue.

Check compression on all 4 cylinders for sure, but possibly a blown head gasket in its beginning phase? That would also come along with overheating and some condensation evidence on the oil cap which eventually follows the coolant into the oil and then you get the milky gray/brown sludge...lets hope not. Good luck
