Before car would occasionally die and not restart, with no consistencies. Now it has happened three times after refiling empty gas tank - with same circumstances:
- engine warmed up - been driving for >20m
- fuel light came on
- refilled with full tank, made sure gas cap clicks
- car won't restart
- cranks strongly
- fuel pump starts and pressurizes rail
- with gas pedal pumping, I can get it to start, but car cannot find idle and dies when I stop pumping gas
- have to manually rev engine for 1-2min until idle works again
- shaking keys in ignition does change anything
- removing and replacing gas cap does not improve issue
- This happened to my wife when I was out of town (not after gas fillup, but randomly). Garage spent 8hrs & $350 troubleshooting, but could not repeat the issue and no codes.
- 180K miles
- currently has a P1457 code - this code has been there during three repeat scenarios, but was not there when earlier random stalling occurred (inconsistent/ different scenarios).
- replaced evap canister vent valve and code went away for few days, but couldn't get one of the hoses off to replace whole canister.
- did not evap leak test yet
- interior lights, dashboard, and headlights flicker as RPM changes
- already cleaned negative battery terminal and grounding point for neg terminal
- alternator and battery checked ok, but alternator rebuilt many years back
- car has been parked for 6-9 months at a time for last 6yrs. I usually treat gas with seafoam when parked, but occasionally miss.
- Was getting P0420 code off/on for last 2-3 years, but high RPM driving with seafoam usually clears things out and code goes off.
