2016 CRV EX Addition of Carplay

We are about to pick up a gorgeous low-mileage 2016 EX (to supplement our workhorse 2011 EX-L with 260,000 km) and wish to add basic nav and traffic functionalities. I am aware that our preferred Android Auto install would mean a new aftermarket head unit, for which I've been quoted about $C1200 for a middle of the road Kenwood or Pioneer with parts, installation etc. Before spending that kind of money, I'd like to investigate adding Carplay to the underwhelming stock head unit, which I understand from the many threads here and elsewhere seems to be possible? The head unit currently shows no sign of having Carplay, so where can I download the required firmware update, or this only done by the dealership? Also, since we are currently Android only, I'd have to pick up a cheap used Iphone to pair with the head unit, so which models/generations of Iphones will work? Thanks in advance

Any Head Unit that supports CarPlay should also support Android Auto. You shouldn't need an iPhone.

Thanks. If I were to bite the bullet and replace the head unit completely, then yes, you are correct and all such units are both AA and Carplay. I haven't ruled out replacing the HU, but I have to investigate further how to DIY the install, I can't justify $1200 for a "pro" install. My question was relating to having to buy a cheap Iphone if I upgraded the existing HU to add that Carplay feature (which does not add AA). All the various Youtube videos and threads on this forum relating to adding Carplay to the existing Gen 4 Head Unit are pretty confusing.

"....so I have Amazon delivering an HDMI to USB-C cable today, ..."

Exactly where are you going to plug in the HDMI end? Is there an HDMI port on your head unit?

I wondered that as well, but I assumed he was using some sort of monitor with an HDMI input.
