I have a 2013 CRV EX-L AWD (NO navigation) and like to add a touchscreen for android auto use. It has the 6-speaker + subwoofer sound system, XM and 6-CD changer, and steering wheel control
My understanding is the small screen (backup camera, mileage etc.) stays and the new screen will replace the old radio controls. I saw many that replace the entire foot-long radio amplifier unit and I'm a bit confused to what I actually need. Ideally I keep the amplifier and only get the screen with the controls. For some I saw I wasn't sure if they will just work with the existing 6+1 way amp. Many on ebay/amazon don't really show a manual specific to my 6+1 sound system (or none at all)
My use is 100% podcast/music and navigation through my android 12 phone. I never use FM, radio, CD, XM etc. the only reason I might want to keep those features is if I sell the car the prospective owner may want them. but that may be in 3+ years. I may just keep the old control button thingy if the new owner wants it. So for me, no FM/XM/CD is fine, but would be a usable addition. Below the pic of my radio.
Currently my use is to put my phone on a suction-mounted X-RAM mount and feed the sound through BT. So I have to take the phone out my pocket and it is somewhat in my way (which is good when using Maps). the new solution should be just a bit simpler and without needing to attach the phone to the mount. I use steering wheel control to change volume and skip/forward music and podcasts.
I saw many units have android 10/11. Are there ones with update paths? Is that a problem to run an old Android? My phone has android 12 (and will be up to 15). I also read WiFi may be used in addition to BT. I probably will never use an iPhone, but having Apple carplay would be nice for resale value.
What devices and features should I look at that would work with MY specific sound system? What are decent devices?
Some features I think may be nice are brightness/glare protection, good touch sensitivity,
