My battery is dying and I'm about to go thru this situation myself. Even though Walmart's are somewhat cheap, they do have a 3-yr warranty and I've used it before. They even test it and show you the results, but make sure you ask to see it, as it depends on who's working. I used to be a Sears Diehard only person, but that was many moons ago. You could ask AAA what brand they use for their battery replacement program and what they charge or warranty that comes with it. Valvoline can also test and change your battery using their own branded battery, but IDK what warranty they offer, either. But definitely, Don't go to the Dealership unless you have extra money you don't mind parting with.

 

A good time to consider upgrading to a AGM or, if possible, to a higher capacity battery. There are threads covering the how’s and why’s of doing that.

Most aftermarket car batteries sold in the U.S. are made by three companies that build them for retailers: Johnson Controls, which supplies more than half of the market, Stryten, and East Penn. They’re sold under various names and built to the specifications of retailers, so performance can vary. Most stores will test, install, and match a battery to your car’s needs.

There are many manufacturers of car batteries. But, aftermarket, there are the main three. If you want cheap then go for the Walmart brand. They have one year warranty (cheap) and three year warranty (more expensive). If you are looking for AGM then head for auto parts stores or tire stores (most expensive).

Usually when buying a new battery, there will be a deposit for core (old battery). Return the old one and get your money back. Look at the battery's CCA to make sure it t least matches your present battery. When installing, to remember to check polarity is correct. Some vehicles need to be told that there is a new battery. I do not believe Honda is one of those.
If you go changing the group size then make sure there is room enough for the new battery along with polarity. Good luck.

 

Note that the dealer's battery and Walmart, Advance Auto, Auto Zone are all the exact same battery made by Clarios, once known as Johnson Controls. Walmart sales the battery at a lower price

 

Get the battery with the highest Reserve Capacity. This is minutes of discharge at a constant rate. The battery is under-sized and there are many electrical devices in the CR-V.

CCA is instant power for starting. CCA is probably not so important for a modern 4 cylinder engine.

Local O'Reilly and Auto Zone stores were priced at $220 and up, for a 3-year warranty.
AAA Auto club jumped my dead battery and was quoting $220 for a 3-year no questions asked battery.
Honda dealer wanted $190 installed, with 3-year warranty. << This was my choice.

I always prefer my dealership as they have been fair with me in pricing. Saying that, it certainly never hurts to compare prices!

I don’t like Walmart for doing anything in my vehicles! I have had bad experiences with them. They have overinflated my tires, stripped the oil pan bolt, and didn’t put enough water in my radiator. I will not use Walmart for anything. I can get parts from a parts store locally that will match Walmarts prices but I prefer my dealership as they have always been fair with me.

My original went out in four years of kind weather and garage kept. I replaced it with a Duracell from Batteries and Bulbs. It going strong at seven years right now. It is the 'better' battery in the series but no where double the price.

I also carry a Halo Bolt not needed on the new one yet.

Some or most automotive manufactures do not like switching from FLAs to AGMs and vice versa; charging system design.

I would keep the same chemistry, but that is my opinion.

 

My 2016 EX has been charging and running perfectly fine on an AGM battery for 3 years now. I got tired of having to replace the feeble 51R batteries every 2 1/2 to 3 years, so I upgraded to the larger Group 47 size. Just had to replace the battery tray with one from a Honda Odyssey.

I've also installed an AGM battery in my wife's Aunt's 2014 Lexus. I've never heard of this issue that you're referring to. An AGM battery should charge and perform fine in any 12 volt automotive application.

 

To add, if there are no aftermarket electronics that draw higher amps or something always on, stock battery will be fine. If the drive is mostly short distance, a battery maintainer is a good investment. Also check and top up water level once or twice a year, even on the batteries with two pop up plates on the top.

 

I disagree with the mindset to Oversize the CCA. To increase CCA the manufacturer uses thinner (more fragile) plates. My opinion is - purchase a battery that's close to original specs.

 

I bought the recommended NAPA battery last year and everything went fine. The prices I checked were all about the same. There was no need to do anything except drive the car after installation and everything reset within a half mile.

i bought a battery for my 2006 honda pilot from the dealer, (in Dallas).... dealer was 223.00, 3 yr warranty. auto zone was around 260.00..... 3 yr warranty.....who would have thought the dealer was less for the battery...

 

Got a 100 month warranty from the dealer on the battery for my 2012.

Everyone saying that all of the batteries are made by a few places, that's true, but it's also meaningless when company contracts to make batteries for different corporations, but each corporation has its own specs. I do suggest you use an AGM battery going forward.

 

I researched replacing my Interstate Battery from Costco ( $100.00 including tax and core) with a AGM Odyssey, but found most AGM's produce about 100 less cold cranking amps. Also read AGM's are not recommended in extreme cold climates.

Honda battery’s are junk. Wouldn’t recommend

 

For my 2013 CRV EX, I replaced an Advance Auto Gold battery in December 2022 with the Platinum series battery that Auto Zone sells. There’s considerable difference between the two brand batteries for Group 51R. The Platinum series uses thicker lead in the battery construction just over 5 pounds more than a standard 3-year 51R battery but shares the same warranty.

When I am not driving the car, it’s usually connected to a NOCO smart charger removing sulfates from the lead plates which increases amperage. I’m curious to see if this Platinum series is a throwback to those made in the 70s -90s.

Btw, the reason batteries have gone up in price considerably is that POTUS 44 shutdown lead smelters in the US. Lead manufactured for batteries is now imported.

 

I have an interstate battery from Costco that is going on 5 years now, I highly recommend.

 

Costco is about the best place to buy batteries. Sometimes $50 less than Autoz...

2014 crv. I never liked Interstate batteries. I go to Advance auto. They sell Diehard battery. And the best thing is they will load test the old battery plus they will install the battery at no charge. I think the 3 year diehards were $220.

 

I have a 2019 Honda CR_V touring that I bought new and the original battery was Junk. I replaced it with a Diehard Gold (500CCA, 625CA & 85 Minute Reserve Capacity from Advance and haven't had any problems since. Where ever you buy it, get the highest CCA, CA & MRC that they sell.

 

I bought a fantastic interstate battery for my 2019 CRV from Costco and it was $135. Great deal.

 

I have a 2008 Touring. My original battery lasted only 2 years as did the second battery.I learned from the tow truck driver that at least this model CRV is known to be a high electrical demand vehicle for its size. I did research and bought a Diehard AGM battery from Advanced Auto. It was not a lot more in terms of cost, and Is a deep cycle battery. I just bought a 2nd one for our 2 year old old 2023 after a discussion with my Honda service advisor who I have known for a long time.
