Gear shift button

My 2017 gear shift button has completely disintegrated. The button is in 3 or 4 pieces and has completely come out. Called my dealer to get the part and have it replaced and they've found out it's on "national backorder" from Honda.

Has anyone else had this issue? If the part is really on national backorder it makes me wonder if its a widespread problem

Yes I can post a picture later today. Basically the button, when depressed causes another button within the shift lever to be pressed down. The silver(ish) button on the side has another piece of plastic behind it which translates the horizontal to vertical movement. That piece of plastic broke into multiple pieces. I had noticed a few weeks ago that the button was "loose" and planned to take it in for service. Last week it broke and I called to make an appt and they said they had ordered the part. My appt was tomorrow morning so I called to make sure it was there and found out it was backordered. My wife has a nearly identical (color) crv - so much so that the vins are almost the same, and hers was much less lose, which is what lead me to realize there was a problem to begin with.

For now it's still usable, I have to place my finger in the shifter and push down on the button. Annoying AF but I can live with it for now. I told the parts guy to go find a new CRV and scavenge it for parts, he didn't go for it.

I now have a case # with Honda corporate customer service since my local dealer seems to have been unable to help me. About a half a day after getting the case # and giving honda corp my vin and contact, I got another call from the "service manager" who stated he would do whatever was in his power to help me. He reiterated from that honda stated the part is still on back-order which, given they're still making these cars (assuming it hasn't changed much or at all from 17-18) I can't imagine they don't have any of them.

It's not unusual for parts on fairly new cars to go on backorder, especially if it's not really thought of as a part that's going to break often. The parts operations are totally separate from manufacturing; they can't just send somebody to the assembly line and grab one. (Especially in a case like this, where that button is almost certainly part of a larger assembly that could be pieced together in a supplier's factory in China or something.)

If a bad batch of something like this goes out the door, the national parts warehouse could run out in a hurry, and it just takes time for the plastics factory to fabricate replacements.

That said, if it was my car, I'd be asking for a loaner while Honda sorted things out. Glad to see they just yanked one off a car on the lot; I wonder how Honda's going to compensate the dealer for this, since that car is now unsellable until the parts arrive.

That is a weird and presumably such a rare issue that parts are rarely available.
Good luck. Be positive with dealer, they’ll help the nice client before the nasty one.

Yes, I was noticing that too just recently. Was trying to use S mode. Detent is a bit heavy to overcome from a fixed position but not so when the gear shift is already in motion. The net effect is an adjacent gear shift can be over run. It's not very user friendly and requires more attention than normally required.

Experienced almost exactly the same issue last night (Friday) but no warning signs that anything was wrong. My ‘top range’ lx had just undergone its 10k service the day before. Reversing out of driveway in the dark and heard something fall on the centre console, tried to select park then realised it was part if gear shift handle that had fallen off. On closer inspection in the dark, I noted that the black plastic part of the shift release knob had disintegrated into about 10 small pieces, some of which had lodged in the shift mechanism, so couldn’t shift into park. To add to the mayhem and chaos, once I worked out what was going on and how to manually override the selector safety mechanism to put in park, I was unable to turn off the ignition! I could stop the engine, but the ignition remained in accessory mode! An unseen piece of broken plastic was still lodged in the shift mechanism, and although in park, was somehow causing this issue. After I removed this piece and put transmission back into park again, it allowed me to turn off the ignition. Of course, now being a Saturday morning, Honda service departments are not open. I managed to speak to a parts department from one of the dealers who informed me this is not the first he has heard of this issue. I do hope Honda is going to re-engineer a whole new button from more sturdy materials

Stopped in at the dealer today with the same problem we all have here. The service attendant said when he saw the part in my hand, "We get a lot of these and have lots in the parts dept." So they know and we will see tomorrow when they fix it!

I just pulled into the garage and placed in park and heard something klunk on my console and realized my shift release knob was missing (darkened interior). When I found the knob, I noticed it was broke!!
I bought my 2017 touring used 4 months ago w/ 6000miles. I can't believe it snapped off but it should be covered by my warranty.

I also have a 2017 CRV Touring and I just had the same problem about an hour ago while doing a 3 point turn. Had a hard time pushing the button to shift to Reverse and noticed it was very loose. I pulled it while wiggling it and came out in two pieces. I called the dealer and I'm taking it in tomorrow so they can see it. I hope the warranty covers it too.

In another thread it is reported that Honda has recognized the problem and that buttons are going to be replaced proactively when cars come in for service.
Be great if those of you having buttons replaced ask your dealer to confirm this program.

Just to clarify they will be replaced with the same design button for now but in early 2019 they will start replacing all 17 and 18 CRV's with a newly designed button that will not break.

Funny, this just happened to me........ Went to move the car in the driveway and the button broke........ Ugh! Reached in with my finger and was able to depress the rod enough to get it out of park and shift it into drive. Normally I would be annoyed by something like this, but since it happened to my 2005 Honda Accord that has 250,000 miles on it and not my 2017 CR-V, I was OK with it. $6 part ordered with free shipping and all should be right in my Honda household in several days ;)

Hey y’all. It’s 7/29/18 and this just happened to me. I found this forum in search for help. I have a 2017 CRV and I was putting my car into drive, when I heard something fall. I thought something may had fell over in the cup holder or something. I got home to realize my shifter button wasn’t there! I can put it back in and use it but it still pops back out. ?
