No lights come on after the battery switch

Day before yesterday, I noticed the smoke coming about from the left side of the car (while facing towards it) or passenger side while I was idling. Luckily this was at home and I turned off the car immediately. When I tried to start the car after it cooled down, it didn't start.

I checked the battery and the voltage was only 5V. Yesterday I bought the portable jump starter which the alternator test and the car started after the jump start and the alternator test failed. I decided to replace the battery as I was reading in the jump starter manual that the battery should be fully charged.

What's strange is that after I have replaced with the new battery, nothing comes on. When I switch on the key, there is no light in the dashboard.

Can the dead alternator cause this? I thought the lights should still come one even when the alternator is dead or is this caused by other issues.
