Parts suppliers in the US -- recommendations

Hello,

I've read a number of times RockAuto mentioned in posts for parts. Anyone have issues with them? I'm asking because their reviews are terrible. Something like 1.7 out of 5 stars. In particular I'm looking for calipers, brake pads and rotors. They have a core charge for the calipers and I'm concerned that I'd send the old ones back and not get my core charge back.

Thanks for your input,
K

Negatives - Rock Auto seems to be a low margin warehouse supplier. They don’t have any customer service, other than an email. If you ever are trying to return an item, be ready to answer 10 pages of questions, providing photos etc, before they’ll consider taking a return.

A decade ago, it took them 2 weeks to ship to you, more recently their shipping is much more competitive, usually arriving in less than a week for me. if they have to ship from multiple warehouses, expect a shipping charge from each warehouse.

If you have something that is on super cheap manufacturer close out, and it has rubber parts such as windshield wipers, expect those parts to have rubber that is dried and hard, although new .. but already 25 years old, lol.

Positives - easy to navigate, no nonsense website to order from. Relatively wide selection of different brand name parts. Very competitive pricing on their parts. I’ve never received a previously opened or wrong part from them.

To me, they are the polar opposite of Amazon in how they work.

Rock Auto is definitely one shop I consider buying from, especially for aftermarket parts. I have no reservations buying from them.

From what I can gather it seems like a roll of the dice.
I don't know if I'd say that. I guess I can buy in town for double the price and have a fraction of the selection.

I order from Rock Auto six or seven times a year. Shipping is usually three or four days. I try to get all items from one or two warehouses or the shipping adds up fast. Yes it does bother me they have no customer service telephone, that's just wrong. Although they have answered even my stupid questions by email.

This order was placed Monday, will be here Thursday.

I'll revive this thread just to give my $0.02 about RockAuto. I feel more comfortable ordering from them than Amazon or ebay when it comes to "good" auto parts.
If you need to return something, like a core, they will charge you for shipping to use their supplied label, or you go get your own shipping and provide them the tracking number. I returned two calipers with their return label and it cost me $9. I'm ok with that.
The calipers I ordered were name brand quality and not store brand that I would have gotten from my local store. The "warehouse" they shipped from was actually a parts store 70 miles away from me but used RockAuto tape on the box. But my core return went to the RA warehouse in Arizona.
For quality brakes components (which you probably purchased by now) I am totally satisfied with the Power Stop Extreme performance drilled and slotted rotors and severe duty ceramic pads I put on my jeep which has oversized tires. I am also using remanufactured Power Stop calipers and love how my heavy Jeep GC stops. The CRV's may not need a heavy duty setup, but I do like the Power Stop lineup.
I have not experienced warrenty returns with RA, and I can see how easy it would be to just walk into a store to warranty a failed part. I guess I have never had a part that I needed to use the warranty.
I have also used RA for antifreeze as the price was great and shipped from the same parts warehouse.

Rockauto has a great website for looking up parts, it gives you brands and part numbers in detail. That information helps if you want to check something locally or on Amazon. Amazon is way better for returns.

They carry various brands, including OE sometimes, and parts are usually noted accurately as in stock or not before you pay.

Their shipping is expensive for any longer/larger items, but you can decide what the all in cost is and place an order or not.

Id say their communication is all bot/Ai . I order fairly regularly from them or Amazon.
