query on pc card adapter and memory

I want to be sure I buy the correct pc card adapter to play mp3 and WMA music files in the '07 w/Navi's audio system.
With the choice between CompactFlash and SD or Flash ATA, I'd like to go with the type that has the most memory for the money. BUT, is there a limit to how big a card you can use with this system, i.e. is a 1 gigabyte card or larger too much?

The owner's manual says "The card limit of the player is 255 folders and 999 tracks. If the card has a complex structure, it takes some time for the system to begin playing it."

I'm not much of a techie, but the "complex structure" seems to concern the number of folders. I don't mind it taking a bit of time before it begins playing. I just want to be able to take as much music out to the car at one time as possible. Some of the songs in my collection are heavy.

Any advice?

Memory Card

I put a 512mb Compact Flash card into the slot of my '07 CR-V EX-L NAVI and it would not play and would not eject. The Dealer removed the card and said it was not the correct one to use. However, they did not have a correct one to show me and had no info about what type of CF card to use. At this point I also need info on the correct Compact Flash card to use.

PC card

I bought a Sandisk Compact Flash PCMCIA card adaptor at Best Buy for around $13, then ordered a 2gb Sandisk Compact Flash card from Amazon for $27. Works great. Using Windows Media Player, I have ripped 15 CD's to the card using MP3 format, and 192 kbps sample rate. The card is about 1/4 full, so looks like it will hold 50-60 CD's.... Be sure to format the card fat32. I make a new folder on the card with the title of each cd, rip the cd to the hard drive, (as long as your computer is connected to the internet, the titles of each song should appear) then drag and drop into the proper folder.

Hope this helps...

Could anyone help me? I have the Sandisk 6-in-1 PC Card Adapter (SDAD-67, MX70003566) and a Kingston 1 GB SD memory card and I only get "MEDIA ERROR".. All equip. according to the manual (recommends CF or SD and the Sandisk 6-in-1).
I have put all files (mp3 and wma) in one folder "mp3". And, yes, I have formatted the memory card FAT32.
The music files plays Ok on the computer in Media Player.

The slot is a PC card slot, not a specific flash card slot.

Since you want the largest storage, get a CompactFlash adapter like the Sandisk one mentioned above.

Sandisk Adapter

Then buy a large CF card. I've seen 16GB cards for around $300 with 4GB cards for around $75.

Personally, I'd get an Ultra or Extreme card (to use Sandisk's naming scheme), not an entry level card. That would be too slow in my opinion. I don't know of the CR-V streams from the card or if it has some cache inside the audio system.

I know: read the manual, but I haven't gotten to this part yet.

I thought the PC card slot was for PC cards? Can't you just buy a card and download music then put it in? What's the adaptor do?

I just bought this adapter for 11 dollars and a 4 gig CF card for another 65. It's not the fastest card Sandisk sells, but...

I have selected 138 folders containing 993 files for a total of 3.59 GB to write to the CF card. I'll let you know how it performs when I get it.

The combo I posted worked perfectly! The only glitch I experienced was that I didn't realize I had ripped some of my MP3s at higher than 160 kbps. I re-ripped those at 160 kbps and everything is great.

PC Card Explination

The PC Card Slot is as it states for PC Cards, or what are also refered to as PCMCIA Cards.

Now PC Cards are normally used in laptops with various functions like BlueTooth, Wireless LAN, Modem, Mobile Data etc and not as a direct storage media.

To use the slot as intended by Honda you have to follow their recommendation of using CF (Compact Flash) and SD cards, which DO NOT fit directly into the PC Card slot as they are not in the correct format.

What needs to happen is for the CF or SD card to be adapted to work in a PC Card Slot, this is done as mentioned earlier via a PC Card Adaptor.

PC Card Adaptors came in main different configurations, of which the ones of direct interest to us are:

(1) A CompactFlash PC Card Adapter
(2) A SD PC Card Adaptor
(3) A SanDisk 6-in-1 PC Card Adaptor (directly mentioned in the Honda manual)

I am sure that plenty other makes of adaptors will work but if you want to work straight off without risk taking one from SanDisk may be a good idea.

Now all you need to do is copy your CD's into your PC and save them to your CF or SD card in the MP3 or WMA format.

Bit rate limitations are:

MP3 - 320kbps (MPEG1) and 160 kbps (MPEG2)
WMA - 192 kbps

Directory structure can only have 8 levels max, a total of 255 folders and 999 tracks. Which really means something like this:

- My Songs
- Jazz
- Artist 1
- Track 1
- Track 2
- Track 3
- Jazz
- Artist 2
- Track 1
- Track 2
- Track 3

I have not found any offical reference to maximum storage size for cards, but I have seen 2GB mentioned on a few other websites.

I would probably go for a middle ground spped card like the SanDisk Ultra II as it should be more than adequate for the purpose.

I hope this helps a little for thoses astill with queries on the PC Card Slot and how to use it correctly.

To what file type did you rip the files? MP3?

Hmm...I haven't used the PC card slot yet as I have just got my CRV two days ago and am waiting for my PCMCIA card to arrive from an online order that I placed.

I don't know if the UK manual is different that the US manual but in the user manual there is a section on the PC Card (pg 199-210) I would suggest that you confirm that you meet the requirements of the file types as listed in the manual.

Do you have a way to test the PCMCIA card to make sure it's not defective?

It does say the following in the manual with regards to errors:

Media Error: It appears when the unsupported PC card is inserted. The system supports CF card, Flash ATA card, and SanDisc 6-in-1 Card Adapter.

I am in the UK too and have my PC card feature working fine.

I use a SanDisk ULTRA PC Card Adapter which takes only CF cards and a SanDisk Ultra II 2GB CF Card.

Everything works fine.

I have 'Ripped' 22 CD's in Windows Media Player 11 in WMA format at 192 kbps and everything lists fine in the car and sounds really clear and great.

Not 100% sure if the CR-V supports SD cards? but it does say that it supports the SanDisk 6in1 card so you may just need to try it with a CF card instead.

Hopes this helps.

i seem to be a bit lost with it all.

i have sony laptop which hsa no sd nor pc card slot so had to get both from web. it took time to get pc card adaptor but i cant think of a way of testing it.

i have asked my local dealer and they said to come tomorrow but they are not too hot re this. in fact they gave me a page of things that i would need to buy.

as far as sd card is concerned it plays the stuff back when i put it on windows media.

any suggestions?

It is really not too complicated at all:

(1) Purchase a PC Card Adapter
(2) Purchase a CF or SD Card
(3) Place CF or SD card in your PC's or Laptop's card reader (if you have no reader you will need one of these too!)
(4) Open Windows Media Player
(5) Select Rip tab and click drop down menu
(6) Select either Windows Media Audio or MP3 from the Format menu
(7) Select rate upto 192 kbps for WMA or upto 360kbps for MP3
(8) Rip CD's to library
(9) Open Sync tab and select your CF or SD card
(10) Drag albums across to the Sync window and the click on start sync
(11) Now the albums will sync to your Cf or SD card
(12) Once finished remove Cf or SD Card
(13) Place Cf or SD Card in PC Card Adapter and insert into the PC Card slot in your CR-V
(14) Enjoy!

i dont know what drm protected means...i just rip the normal audio cd and then sync them onto sd card.

i am trying to rip another cd now with the 192kbps rate setting to see if that makes any difference...

and also the adapter was the SanDisk Ultra PC Card Adapter

Ref no. SDDR-64-783

also from Play.com for ÂŁ5.99 inc p&p

The adapter is a CF card one only.

#35 ·
As you have the 6-in-1 card adapter from SanDisk y ou could also try getting hold of a friends CF card to see if that works.

Even though the Honda manual for the Navigation System lists both CF and SD cards on page 102 when you get to page 107 and the PC Card Error Message section it cleary mentions that the system supports:

CF Card, Flash ATA card and SanDisk 6-in-1 Card Adapter
