Someone damaged my parked car, now what?

Hi all. I just found out someone damaged my CRV while it was parked on the street. What's the next step?

A friend came by to drop something off and when he was leaving he noticed my 2018 CRV EX had been damaged on the rear driver's side. No idea who did it since I don't have a 24/7 dash cam. I work from home now so only go out to swap sides because of alternate side parking. I brought it to a repair shop during my lunch break, but they said they weren't a body shop so couldn't give me an estimate. I'm going to go to my usual one tomorrow to get an estimate. I also put a note on the building it was parked in front of hoping they caught it on one of their security cameras.

This is the first time my car's been damaged so I'm not 100% sure what to do. I read I should get a quote from a repair shop before I contact my insurance. I have "Comprehensive (Excluding Collision) Coverage $1,000 Ded. With Full Glass".

Do I only tell my insurance company know (Geico) if the cost is more than $1,000? Does this look like damage that would cost more?

Ugh... after hearing the bad news and seeing the damage I've been feeling so terrible.

Comprehensive coverage won't cover this, collision coverage does. After all, it was a collision. That said, Geico can help you but yes, you would be wise to ask them what impact it will have on your rates.
Insurance companies are not always wiling to believe that the vehicle was hit while parked, I always recommend that people take pictures showing the damaged parts on the ground where it was hit, if there's anything to see there. It helps them to believe you.

X 2 on filing a police report asap. Since this was a hit and run, that will be very important. Liability would only cover the other parties vehicle if you were at fault, and not yours.
Comprehensive covers damage other than collision, ie theft/fire/vandalism/acts of God, etc. Fingers crossed for you, but you may be out of luck.

"No, comprehensive coverage will not cover damage from a hit-and-run; instead, collision coverage or uninsured motorist property damage (UMPD) coverage will typically pay for the damage. Comprehensive insurance covers non-collision events like theft, vandalism, or natural disasters, while collision coverage applies when your car hits another object or is hit by another vehicle, including a hit-and-run."

Please let us know how it goes.

I know my comment is 'after the horse has bolted' but I got forward and rear cameras installed. Got in turned the ignition on, informed me it had recorded an incident, reviewed it and it showed a chap walking his dog, tentative look around and proceeded to key my new CR V right down the offside, and showed him entering his house, as the system I have recorded 5 seconds pre and post 'event'. Knocked at his door offered him the choice of paying for the damage and my time, or a Criminal Record, he paid up... Never found out 'WHY?' So my friend, invest in a good camera system, you would have got the perpetrator. Good luck with the repair.

I went to the local police station and they told me that next time I should call 911 from the spot it was parked. I just assumed 911 was only for emergencies. They gave me a Civilian Accident Report form to fill out. Already contacted my insurance and waiting for them to get someone out to inspect it.

I have front and rear dash cams, but never set it up to do parking footage since I was afraid the heat wouldn't be great for the battery.

Interesting. Is this your first car ever? I am assuming you have auto insurance. You just call your insurance, report the incident/damage, and they will get the ball rolling. They will most likely tell you to get a couple of repair quotes. All of this will be covered by your uninsured motorist coverage and you will only pay your deductible amount. Simple, but a pain in the butt regarding taking the time to get the quotes, choosing a repair shop, renting a car to drive while your car is being repaired. So much time involved due to some irresponsible idiot who didn't even have the huevos to leave you a note with their information. I would say what comes around, goes around to the perp, but obviously the perp is probably driving a banged up pile of crap with no insurance......and possibly no driver's license. Sorry for your dilemma and good luck to you. I've been though this whole nightmare myself.

I shared a car with my brother back in the day, but this is my first car that's my own. The only time I had an accident was on the highway, driving my dad's minivan, when a state trooper rear ended me so they helped me get everything started. Never had any damage to my CRV until now. I was really hoping to get to 10 years having it perfect and then maybe trade it in. People always made it sound like cops wouldn't even bother coming out for something like this, but I'll remember to call them right away if there's a next time.

Congrats on the progress. It sounds like you have proper insurance.
Re the time frame, vehicle crash repairs post covid have not been what I'd call quick. At one time, the supply chain issues were causing simple repairs to become weeks and sometimes months.

The driver's ed company I work for had one that was down for 3 months.

Yeesh. I hope it's better now. Maybe it'll give me an excuse to go to places by public transit more that I wouldn't normally go to since there's no parking.
