I have a 2019 CR-V which is just reaching 100,000 miles (lots of road trips). I see that Honda recommends replacing the timing chain at 100,000 miles, but also read online that the chain should last the life of the vehicle. I've maintained the vehicle very well and have had no problems thus far. Does anyone know how important it is to replace the chain and is it really going to cost me over $1000 ?? Thanks for any help...

Yes, it might cost you $1000. o_O

But as Coastie said, timing chains are not a normal wear item. You will get OBD codes if the chain stretches...the crankshaft and camshaft sensors will no longer be 'in time'.

Just monitor the oil level. Low oil (more than a quart down) increases the wear.

My Maintenance Minder came on this week: B 1 2 3 4
#4, when I looked it up on-line, says: "Replace spark plugs, Inspect valve clearance (cold), Replace timing belt and inspect water pump". Another site said "Replace timing belt (if equipped)".

So hmm, since this car has a timing CHAIN, I suppose this would not apply?? That would be very good news.

Thanks for all the feedback so far> I wanted to know what I might be up against before I go to the dealership.

The internet is largely a non-curated mass of "he said, she said, yada yada".

Attention to detail is important here. So is specific awareness of your vehicle.

When you look up Honda codes online, you are going to get a generic set that covers all possible Hondas that have Maintenance Minders. What you should do is consult your owners manual for your specific vehicle.

The engine in your CRV is NOT equipped with a timing belt, it has a timing chain. As others have noted, the timing chain never needs replacement unless there is a specific defect issue.

Also, the more awareness of your vehicles engine components, and service intervals and requirements (by Honda, not by some dealer) that you have, the less issues you will have when a service provider starts recommending "other services" to perform.
