My 2011 CRV has 145K miles on it and I've experienced the dreaded VTC noise sporadically for several years now. Recently the noise started happening much more frequently. (It sounds like gravel inside a blender.) Dealer still does not recommend replacing the VTC actuator and timing chain at this point. (Their current estimate on this repair, including new chain guides is $1700.
During my most recent trip to my Honda dealer the service adviser suggested using an oil additive (restorer?) to possibly help keep the camshaft better lubricated. No specific recommendations, but told me to avoid STP.
Has anyone else tried this approach or found another temporary remedy?
Meanwhile after the oil change, the noise is still around, but I hear less frequently. I've decided it's time to ignore the oil life monitor and have the oil changed more frequently.
Any VTC Actuator advice will be appreciated.
