1st gen P0304 + P1399 code solution?

Hey! I've had my 99 Crv for a couple of years now and it's time for a smog check. I've had a CEL for awhile and Obd reads as 0304+1399. I replaced my spark plugs and tested for a misfire by removing the caps (each one resulted in an idle change). Spark plug replacement removed my CEL for ~50 miles before it came back on. Is there any way for me to know if it's a head gasket issue or if a valve lash adjustment is needed before I try and fix something to no (possible) avail? Or if there's any other solutions that I haven't read about? Thanks!

Welcome to the forum

Do a search on this forum for those code & misfire. there are plenty of threads dealing with that problem.

It would be faster for you to read about it than waiting for several replies on this thread.

Jmo.

In essence, those codes usually are caused by valves out of specs, or simple things like basic tune ups that have not been taken care of.

Or worst, burnt valves; but those will cause strong backfires, really bad idle, unburnt fuel smell, black smoke.....

Again, I strongly recommend to check other threads on the subject.

The valve lash on 1st Gen Crv's needs to be adjusted at LEAST every 30k miles. The service manual is incorrect as there is an issue with the exhaust valves tightening on their own over time. If they tighten too much and recede into the valve seat it can burn a valve up, I have even heard of it damaging the cylinder head but I haven't seen that myself.

Personally I adjust them every year when I do a tune up. That way they never mess up. It's not very difficult just make sure you double check your clearances. Hell I triple check. Here is a video of how to do it if you're unsure.

the factory dongle should have come with a set of bent feeler gauges attached 😉
